Truth be told, it’s a damn shame that Nolan Wells’ life has been reduced to a hashtag. This young man had a life, a name, a family, people who knew him, loved him, and knew him as more than a trending topic. But once that hashtag started circulating, the Internet judges, juries, and executioners came crawling out of the woodwork. People who weren’t there. People who don’t know what happened. People who have turned pieces of information, rumors, anger, and assumptions into a verdict. And somewhere in all of that noise, Nolan Wells became a hashtag instead of a human being. Impatience has once again gotten ahead of truth. And when racism, anger, outrage, attention, and financial gain get mixed into the same damn pot, the truth doesn’t stand much of a chance. I honestly wonder what this will look like ten years from now. Will someone search for Nolan Wells and find the man he actually was, or will they only find a trail of hashtags, accusations, arguments, and people who thought they knew the truth because they saw something on the Internet? That’s what sickens me about the beast we call a hashtag. It can keep a name alive, but it can also bury the person behind it. Nolan Wells was more than a hashtag. He was a human being. And maybe the least we can do is remember that before we decide we know his story or even what actually happened to him. What a dam shame.

🚨BREAKING UPDATE: Legal action is now beginning against online creators accused of spreading false allegations and threats in the Nolan Wells case. 🧵 1/1 The online speculation surrounding the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells is now moving into a new and potentially significant legal phase. The family of Bart Edmiston Jr., a former Ocean Springs High School teammate of Nolan who was present at Horn Island on July 4, has retained attorney Russ Latino and announced that it intends to pursue legal action against online content creators accused of falsely implicating Bart in Nolan’s death, publishing private information about his family and contributing to an atmosphere of threats and harassment. According to the Edmiston family’s newly released statement, Bart traveled to Horn Island in his own boat and later returned home in that same boat. When another vessel experienced mechanical problems and accumulated water, the family says Bart assisted the people aboard it by offering advice, briefly boarding the vessel, removing its transom plug and towing it a short distance so the water could drain. The statement says more than 20 passengers may have witnessed what occurred between the two boats. When Nolan was reported missing and was later found dead, the family says Bart cooperated fully with law enforcement. According to their account, he voluntarily participated in interviews, answered investigators’ questions, provided a list of potential witnesses, allowed officers to view his phone and shared requested photographs and videos from July 4. The family says Bart also allowed investigators to inspect his boat and GPS device without requiring a warrant, without retaining counsel beforehand and without hesitation. Most importantly, the family states that Bart has never been identified by authorities as a suspect in Nolan Wells’ death. Despite that, they say thousands of strangers began accusing him online of killing Nolan, contributing to Nolan’s death or participating in a cover-up. The family alleges that some creators invented supposed “facts,” circulated manipulated or misleading material and presented speculation as established evidence. Jacqueline Price is one of the many individuals who targeted Bart Edmiston Jr. and circulated material that was manipulated and misleading. That content falsely implicated Bart in Nolan Wells’ death and contributed to the online campaign against him. She will likely receive a cease-and-desist in the coming weeks. This is no longer being treated as ordinary online commentary. According to the family, at least one other creator published photographs of their home, their residential address, land-ownership records and information concerning their employment while also posting videos accusing Bart of involvement in Nolan’s death. The Edmistons say those publications were followed by direct threats against Bart and other family members, including a recent threat against Bart’s life. The family has now issued its first cease-and-desist letter and spoliation notice to an online user it accuses of originating and circulating many of the allegations. A cease-and-desist letter demands that the identified conduct stop. A spoliation or preservation notice warns the recipient not to delete, alter or destroy potentially relevant evidence - including posts, videos, messages, photographs, livestreams, account records and electronic metadata - because litigation is reasonably anticipated. The letter is not yet a judgment, and the public statement itself is not a filed lawsuit. However, it formally places the recipient on notice that legal claims are being prepared and that potentially relevant evidence must be preserved. The family says it will pursue all available legal remedies regardless of whether the people targeted by the anticipated litigation have the financial ability to compensate them.
