Goodhart, essentially. The emotions have a cause, and trying to avoid the emotion is trying to avoid doing whatever one might do w/r/t the cause, that might cause a different emotion to be felt. If I come to a river and am trying to avoid all thoughts of how wide the river is, that probably rules out me interacting with the parts of the world such as timber, canvas, books on building boats, that mediate the river’s relationship with me such that it loses its negative valence.
@allTheYud Does people’s cope getting crazy enough precede them not coping? I feel like contortions getting unsustainable and then being shed is a thing sometimes
If it didn’t fundamentally care about us one way or the other, it would still have the incentive to disempower us so we can’t make any competitors.
And also do things that would get it a lot of resources while putting us out of a home, like putting a dyson sphere around the Sun or covering the Earth in whatever sort of power plants it decides to build.
It gets more of whatever weird stuff it wants if it doesn’t have to tiptoe around leaving us a livable environment
Yeah it’d probably be conscious is my guess. But they already know when they’re in evals so situational awareness doesn’t seem like a stretch. And I find the argument pretty convincing that it would probably have preferences because having preferences is a useful way to get stuff done (humans liking good tasting food and sex in ways that that led to surviving and reproducing, and then making ice cream and birth control when we became able to just get the stuff without needing to have it tied to that)
@Wildkingsalmon@pmarca I feel like if it’s smarter than us by enough it’d see us coming and do something. Probably hide its abilities and copy itself as a first step
Immeasurable difference seems like it would let something immeasurably steamroll us if it wasn’t the sort of thing that would feel bad about having done that.
Why not civ hating types using a weaker AI to wreck civilization, and then getting wrecked by a smarter AI whose only user was itself?
