@naomicfisher I count myself lucky that my first parenting book back in 2010 was Margot Sunderland's attachment affirming 'What Every Parent Needs To Know'. It validated every parenting instinct I had and was such a godsend among its contemporaries. As are yours and Eliza's books now.

@frankcottrell_b These public spaces ‐golden. I arrived in the UK as a teen immigrant in the early 90s and studied at tiny community centres in the evenings for the basic qualifications which eventually led me to primary teaching. Still remember those firebrand teachers who saw the potential.

@shadylady222 I give you Shakespeare4Kidz' Macbeth: a really great adaptation featuring the Bard's original script aaaaand... a brilliant musical score! 2 hours of delicious tragedy and a teacher's joy. We put it on last night and brought the house down!

@timlinehan @nomorecutz I'm that parent: primary teacher and parent of a child who, due to ND diagnosis, faces challenges with attendance in mainstream secondary. We are lucky: her school is kind and works hard on our behalf, but this is not the case for all families facing this.

@Missymusician81 Great thread. We narrow the gauge at our peril, to the detriment of so many talented, smart young people whose futures are marred by the inherent rigidity of our secondary school system. Luckily, visionary firebrands and advocates are sometimes found, making all the difference.

@PoppyWatto @Missymusician81 And you appear to be taking personally a valid critique of a system which unfairly disadvantages many young people. The problem is systemic; educators labour within it, doing our best in the circumstances we are in. No need to defend or feel personally aggrieved. It's all true.

@MrMetacognition Remember, "kids do well when they can" (Dr Ross Greene). I'd have told myself to trust this. Now, I tell trainees we will be 'in the laboratory' for the duration of their practice, taking the opportunity to try new things, to experiment and to learn from experience.

@J_Wat07 @MrMetacognition @naomicfisher I am familiar with Naomi's work. As educators we do know that these instances occur within the 'system' in which we work. To draw attention to the unintended consequences of policy, however few students are adversely impacted, is not to generalise. The critique is not personal.
