Murugan is a pan-Indian god. In fact, his worship is found as far as Afghanistan. The Yaudheyas, Kushans, and Guptas all depicted him in their coinage. Many Kartikeya temples existed across Bharata, but the ones in the North were heavily affected by invasions. The shrines to Murugan in Southern India, especially Tamil Nadu, were protected, and worship survived here. Reducing his existence to a single region would be to deny his essence. His various names (Murugan, Kartikeya, Skanda, Subrahmanya, Seyon, etc.) are just different facets of the same deity. Claiming that they are separate ignores the numerous references in literature and inscriptions. Even our ancient Tamil Kings didn't differentiate between Subrahmanya and Murugan. His traditional Tamil name "Seyon: The Red One" actually bears parallels with the Vedic tradition of Agni Kumara. In many places, Rudra (the father of Kartikeya) is called as Babhru, the reddish one. This shows us that the Tamil tradition was not different from the Vedic tradition. It was all part of the same civilizational framework, and Murugan is a prime example of that. Whether you call him Murugan, Kartikeya, or Skanda, the truth is that he belongs to the whole of India. Kudos to the filmmakers for acknowledging this unity in our land. Looking forward to the film!
