Prime Minister Modi finds time and opportunity to target dissenters even on a solemn national occasion like Independence Day, conveniently forgetting what the people of India are asking of him and his government. To the baseless categories repeatedly conjured up by the Right Wing: “anti-national”, “tukde-tukde gang” and others, Modi has now added another absurd label: “dimagi naxal”. This is nothing but an attempt to stigmatise dissent and intimidate those who question the government. Modi ji, India’s youth and students are on the streets demanding educational and employment reforms. Did you answer their questions? Why have nearly a lakh government schools been closed? Why has public education been allowed to deteriorate so badly? Why are millions of young people struggling for secure employment? And while you lecture the country about “dimagi naxals”, will you tell us about the activities of right-wing extremists who seek to redefine Indian nationhood itself, intimidate and abuse those who dissent, and even target young girls barely 15 years old? India’s freedom was won by people who questioned colonial authority, resisted injustice and refused to remain silent. Not by the RSS who was serving the British and never accepted our Constitution or national flag. On Independence Day, the Prime Minister should answer the people’s questions, not manufacture new labels to silence them.

The British put her in jail several times. Then India became free, and an Indian government put her in jail again, and fined her, for refusing to give up her mother tongue. She died in a poor ashram, living on a freedom fighter's pension. Her name was Labanya Prabha Ghosh. She was born on 14th August 1897. She never went to school. Her father taught her at home. At the age of 11, in 1908, she was married to Atul Chandra Ghosh, a lawyer who later gave up his practice for the freedom movement. Their home in Purulia, an ashram called Shilpashram, became the centre of the freedom struggle in the Manbhum region. Subhas Chandra Bose came there. Chittaranjan Das came there. Gandhi visited it. In 1926 she was elected to the District Congress Committee from Manbhum. In 1930, when Gandhi began the Salt Satyagraha, she organised the marches in her own district. In 1941 she offered individual satyagraha and was arrested. In 1942, during Quit India, she went to jail again. In 1945 she organised a flag satyagraha at Konapara. Then came 1947, and the part almost nobody talks about. Manbhum, where she lived, was not in Bengal. It was in Bihar. After independence the Bihar government moved to make Hindi compulsory there, over Bengali, which was the language of the people of that district. She led the movement against it. It was called the Bhasha Andolan. For that, the government of independent India jailed her, more than once, and fined her. She did not stop. The movement went on for years, and it worked. In 1956 Purulia was separated from Bihar and joined West Bengal, and the people there kept their language. In 1957 she was elected to the West Bengal assembly from Purulia. After her husband died she took over editing their newspaper, Mukti, and ran Shilpashram herself. She lived to be nearly 106. She died on 11th April 2003. For the last part of her life she lived in that ashram in poverty. Her only income was the pension the state pays to freedom fighters. The people of Purulia called her Manbhum Janani, the mother of Manbhum. Tomorrow the country will hoist the flag. She was born on the day before Independence Day, and she spent her life on both sides of it, fighting the British first and then her own government, for the same thing.

I was born in southern Lebanon and have lived there my entire life—for more than 35 years—I was born in wars, lived through wars, and worked in their midst of these wars in relief and diplomacy. Arresting Netanyahu is not the be-all, end-all. The problem is Israel. I have lived through 8 different Israeli Prime Ministers and different extremist government; while Netanyahu's right wing extremist government is the most horrendous, but they are all cut from the same cloth. Promoting the blame on Netanyahu for the genocide and ecocide in Lebanon is misleading. The reality is, Netanyahu is not the disease, he is a symptom of it. The same things were said when Shimon Peres committed massacres in Lebanon in 1996—most horrific the Qana Massacre, when Israel bombed a United Nations center sheltering around 800 displaced Lebanese civilians. The same was said when Ehud Barak, Ehud Olmert, and Ariel Sharon committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Lebanon. Now, the same is being said about Netanyahu. If Netanyahu were arrested and removed today, would Israel suddenly stop being so problematic and a threat to world peace? No! The problem is not Netanyahu alone; it is Israel as a whole. Peace without justice is an illusion. And diplomacy can be made only with countries that respect international law. It's extraordinary that Israel can go on a mass murder and steal land from three neighboring countries simultaneously while you will look us dead in the eye and say Israel wants peace. We know who the enemy of peace is. it has a name, it is Israel.

Not one of them has disarmed under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which legally obligates them to work toward disarmament. Not one. The NPT has been in force since 1970. Fifty-six years. The nuclear powers have modernized their arsenals, developed new delivery systems, and in the case of the United States, budgeted over $1.7 trillion for nuclear modernization over the next thirty years. So your question, "Is proliferation good?", would be more interesting if you directed it at the countries that have been proliferating, continuously, for eighty years, while telling everyone else that the capacity they are expanding for themselves is too dangerous for others to possess. The question is not whether nuclear weapons are good. The question is why the word "proliferation" only applies to the countries that don't already have them. That asymmetry is the argument. You haven't addressed it.
