I’l envy everyone who didn’t see the video of an Israeli soldier forcing a Palestinian to bang his head on the ground or get shot in the head. Watching it left me consumed with rage, to the point where I want to lash out violently May they suffer the ultimate pain ever known to humanity.

She helped write the document that protects the rights of every human being on earth. Most Pakistanis have never heard her name. Begum Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah. 1915 to 2000. First Muslim woman to earn a PhD from the University of London. 1939. One of only two women in Pakistan's first Constituent Assembly. 1947. Delegate to the United Nations during the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 1948. For 81 meetings she sat in the committee debating every word. She championed Article 16. Equal rights in marriage. Specifically to fight child marriage and forced marriage. That article is now international law. Because of her. Back home she fought for women's inheritance rights in the Constituent Assembly. Won. The Islamic Personal Law of Shariah passed in 1951. Pakistan's first female civil servant. First female ambassador. Pakistan's Ambassador to Morocco. 1964. She wrote her autobiography From Purdah to Parliament in 1963. Still in print. Still assigned in universities. Awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz posthumously in 2002. She started in purdah. She ended at the United Nations shaping the document the whole world lives by. Writing about her made me feel a sense of pride in my own womanhood. Begum Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah. Pakistan Zindabad. 🇵🇰
