Jet fuel is down 40% from its April peak. Chicago outbound cargo rates are up 10% this week alone. Global air freight rates fell -2.7% in the week to July 6 — a second consecutive weekly decline as lower jet fuel prices finally feed through. Hong Kong: -0.7% WoW. Shanghai: -6.0%. Frankfurt: -2.9%. Heathrow gave back 11.5%. Then there's Chicago. Up +10.1% on the week. +49.6% year-on-year. The reason has nothing to do with a shortage of planes. Legacy carriers trimmed routes during the fuel spike and haven't added them back. Fuel is falling. Rates are not. Global air freight rates gained +5.8% through most of June despite the US-Iran peace deal and a -26% plunge in jet fuel prices. The BAI00 only dipped in the final week — and still closed June +31.3% above a year ago. Above the peak of each of the last three peak seasons. Two things keeping rates elevated: carriers still burning fuel contracted at March and April's extreme prices — and shippers front-loading ahead of peak season. The EU de minimis rule change that took effect July 1 pulled demand forward through June too.
