The problem is not the school trip. The problem is a society where safety rules can be broken for a small payment, then everyone acts shocked when the consequences arrive. We are very quick to suspend study trips whenever tragedy strikes, but we rarely confront the deeper problem: a culture of unsafe roads and weak enforcement that continues to kill our children. A school trip does not become dangerous because children travel. It becomes dangerous because we allow unroadworthy vehicles, reckless driving, overloading, speeding, and corruption in traffic enforcement to exist. How many times have traffic officers stopped vehicles with obvious violations, negotiated with drivers, collected money, and allowed them to continue on roads where families are travelling? How many times do we need to hear “the driver lost control,” “the vehicle had a mechanical problem,” or “speed was involved” before we admit that many of these tragedies are preventable? Suspending study trips is an easy response because it creates the appearance of action. But it does not fix broken systems. It does not train drivers. It does not repair dangerous vehicles. It does not stop corruption. It does not make our roads safer. The real question we should be asking is not: “Why are schools taking children for trips?” The real question is: “Why have we accepted a road system where safety rules can be negotiated?” We need stronger road safety standards, strict enforcement, accountability for traffic officers who compromise safety, proper inspection of vehicles, and consequences for drivers who put lives at risk. Our children do not need fewer opportunities to learn and explore. They need adults and institutions that take their safety seriously. A nation that only reacts after people die is not protecting its citizens. It is managing tragedies. @Educ_SportsUg @PoliceUg
