Helmut Schoeck made a sharp observation about envy: “The envious man does not so much want to have what is possessed by others as yearn for a state of affairs in which no one would enjoy the coveted object or style of life.” I would add another vice to that discussion: sloth. When envy and sloth combine, the temptation is to demand that government pull others down instead of helping people build themselves up. It is easier to resent success than to create it. Easier to redistribute wealth than to produce it. Easier to promise benefits than to encourage investment, entrepreneurship, and hard work. That is one of my criticisms of Wab Kinew and the Manitoba NDP. Too often the focus appears to be on expanding government, redistributing resources, and framing success with suspicion rather than creating the conditions for more Manitobans to succeed through productive work and private investment. A healthy society should reward effort, innovation, saving, and responsible risk-taking. It should encourage people to climb the ladder, not spend its energy arguing over who should be pulled down a rung. Envy levels down. Industry builds up. The choice matters.
