A report by Jyoti Yadav for The Migration Story on the continued plight of 137 rescued bonded labourers in Bihar's Gaya district has led to administrative action. The story revealed that although the workers had been rescued from brick kilns, many were still waiting for their release certificates—a crucial document required to access rehabilitation and compensation under the law.
Following the publication of "The Inheritance of Debt: Bihar's Musahars Still Marry, Give Birth in Bondage," and repeated follow ups with concerned authorities, the state labour department sprang into action and issued release certificates to the rescued workers.

Due to the socio-economic hardships they face, migrants are extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases, especially tuberculosis, and are considered a high-risk population in the National Strategic Plan to End TB.
Lack of sunlight, poor ventilation, overcrowding and overheating in Delhi's informal settlements leave migrant workers vulnerable to Tuberculosis and make a full recovery challenging.

While men have historically dominated labour migration into Kashmir, a small number of women migrants have also begun finding work in tailoring, beauty services and wedding-related businesses.
And these new local businesses run by migrant women, have brought financial independence to them, and created spaces where local women can finally ask for what they want.

Domestic workers are an essential part of millions of families across the world. 75 million domestic workers support the running of the households as well as caring of the families around the globe and it is only expected to rise in the coming years.
Today is International Domestic Workers' Day and at The Migration Story we have consistently put the spotlight on this invisible workforce.
At the recently concluded #Groundswell - our annual convening - we discussed the discrimination that workers continue to suffer, how migration adds an additional layer of vulnerability and how the way forward is possibly collectivising as it has empowered this workforce. Here's a glimpse into the discussion.
