USS LUCID MSO-458 is being restored by the Stockton Maritime Museum in Stockton, CA. Lucid is the only MSO known to be salvageable in the United States. Other MSOs could exist which were sold overseas. facebook.com/usslucid

Mil-STD-1330D requires all personnel handling oxygen components be certified to the standard. Contractors are required to be trained by a certified instructor. Certifications expire after three years. Traintss.net #usnavy
In 1970 an oxygen system fire occurred aboard the USS Pollack. The fire consumed much of the oxygen regulator. The fire may have been caused by impact ignition of a foreign fragment or contaminant. Traintss.net #oxygenclean #usnavy
USSR Komsomolets K-278 a nuclear sub with a titanium hull was the deepest diving and fastest sub. She was comm'd 28 Dec 1983 and sank in the North Sea off Norway 7 April 1989. 42 of the 69 crew died from fire, drowning or hypothermia. The fire was purportedly in the O2 system.

@museumships Lucid was stripped of all equipment and metal parts and left completely empty. Eventually she was filled with unwanted junk and left derelict in the California Delta owned by a recluse civilian owner. On his death she was donated to a foundation looking foe an MSO. #USNavy
USS Ortolan ASR-22 Commissioned 14 July 1973, Decommissioned 30 March 1995. A twin hull submarine rescue vessel had a horrific fire in her engineering space. Caused by the cracking of a diaphragm in an oxygen compressor. Oxygen certification is now required. #USNavy
@jon_jeckell Submarine O2 generators use deionized water same as the reactor. No chance for cross contamination.

On 1 Oct 1958 the USS Sargo SSN-583 was commissioned. On 14 JUN 1960 at Pearl Harbor she had a devastating oxygen fire. Fire caused torpedo explosion. Aft end was submerged to put out the fire. One life lost. Oxygen safety is serious business.

@museumships Lucid is now owned outright by Stockton Maritime Museum. Restoration is going great guns with the installation of a 40mm on the bow.
