Putin remains convinced he can outlast the West, and the only way to shatter that calculation is to finally hand Russia’s frozen assets to Ukraine. Using Russia’s frozen assets to fund Ukraine’s defense is the single smartest move Europe can make to force Putin to rethink his timeline. Russia has shown zero interest in genuine negotiations or ending this war. Instead, Moscow is preparing for future mobilizations and planning another brutal winter terror campaign against Ukrainian cities and power grids. If Western leaders need a clear justification to act, Russia's continued escalation is more than enough proof that Kyiv urgently needs those funds to defend itself. Transferring Russia's frozen assets right now provides Ukraine with a vital financial shield. Crucially, doing this immediately locks in long-term support before political shifts in Europe, like potential election victories for the RN in France or AfD in Germany, can block future EU aid packages (or a future transfer of the frozen assets). It is both morally right and strategic to make the aggressor pay for Ukraine's defense rather than placing the burden entirely on European taxpayers. European voters would overwhelmingly prefer using Moscow's money to finance the war effort. European leaders, particularly in Belgium, need to stop hiding behind legal hesitation while Euroclear sits on billions. Blocking these assets while Ukraine suffers leaves a heavy moral responsibility on those holding the money back

The Sovietisation of Eastern Europe was a brutal process. It did not merely impose a political system - it shaped institutions, incentives, and the mentality of entire generations. Much of that system survived 1991. Countries that failed to carry out deep, lasting reforms - to dismantle those structures and produce a genuinely new political elite - ultimately failed to build functioning states. Bulgaria is one example. Ukraine’s survival is predicated on precisely such reforms. Those who understand the region will understand why. Given how much the West has contributed to the devastation of Eastern Europe over the past century - often through an arrogant refusal to understand it - I would not place much weight on the “takes” of people who live thousands of kilometres away and have never experienced that system for a single day: neither under the Soviet Union nor in its aftermath. Ukraine was among the most deeply Sovietised nations. For it, reform is not a matter of optics or pleasing Western observers, but one of survival. Discard any other takes on the matter.

There is nothing more pathetic or contemptible than watching Russians launch what they thought would be a short splendid war to crush Ukraine in a matter of days, only to fail spectacularly in their blitzkrieg. They wiped entire Ukrainian cities and regions off the face of the earth, committed an unimaginable number of war crimes, plunged Ukraine into darkness and freezing cold during the harshest winter on record, spent years bringing down apartment buildings with sleeping families inside night after night, destroyed supermarkets, children’s hospitals, theaters, and libraries, historic monuments, churches, and cathedrals, murdered people, beheaded and castrated prisoners of war on camera, executed and burned civilians, tortured them, and left mass graves behind. And now they are hysterically wringing their hands and crying to the heavens because Ukraine is burning down warehouses full of Chinese junk meant for online sales. “Why is this happening to us?
