High School coaches say the biggest areas of weakness with incoming freshman are Baseball IQ and base-running, with being able to bunt properly and pitchers backing up bases on the list too. Most of these players have been playing for years and likely have had 100’s of practices and played 100’s of games by this point. Why do we think many of these youngsters don’t have better feel for the game in these areas by now? What’s missing from the years prior? Is it “just a kid thing?” Is it a lack of coaching? Is it how the game is taught and played on the small field compared to the big field? All of the above?

@ErmanniMedia I think it was expected that Vierling would roll over on pitches, based upon pitch type and speed. Most teams analyze pitch profiles before making decisions of this magnitude and hitters (in small windows) tend to do certain things to certain pitches.

It happened for a couple reasons. First of all, during the player strike Lou had some choice comments about ‘being rich’ that rubbed a ton of writers the wrong way so they have had a vendetta against him since. Unrelatedly, he platooned quite a bit at the end.. Lou was an OBP hog. BB>K

I was working with one of my players today. He looked at me and said, "Coach... I just want to get more hits." I smiled and said, "That's not your job." He looked confused. I told him, "Your job is to increase your probability of getting a hit." That's what hitting really is. A game of probabilities. On 0-0, the odds say you're most likely to get a fastball. So hunt the fastball. On 2-0...Fastball. 3-0...Fastball. 3-1...Fastball. You're stacking the odds in your favor. Now think about why batting averages drop with two strikes. Because now you have to protect against the fastball...The breaking ball...And the changeup. The odds become less favorable. The same principle applies to your swing. Your job isn't to chase hits. Your job is to hit the ball hard as often as possible. Why? Because hard-hit balls become hits far more often than weakly hit balls. You're not trying to guarantee a hit. You're trying to increase the probability of getting one. The best hitters don't chase results. They chase probabilities. They hunt the pitches they're most likely to get.
