There’s a few things at play here: 1. CJ’s trade value is lower as a 2B than a SS. So moving him there may be a sign they are keeping him. His extension cost as a 2B is also (slightly) lower than a SS. 2. Seaver King getting a cup of coffee at SS increases his trade value.
@savanarola5 1. If you want to trade him as a 2B, the worst thing you can do is provide the opportunity to expose him as a bad 2B. Keeping him at SS doesn’t hurt the perception he can’t play short, it could help it if he has a few good months. To be clear. Abram’s Long term at 2B.
@chall77 If no one views him at a shortstop but the organization keeps him at shortstop, he has a month and a half to prove both to the organization and the league that he can be a shortstop. That is not happening.
@AJ_Lich 2. Kings name popped up at the trade deadline several times. Middle infield has strong organizational depth. A MLB ready top 100 SS prospect could bring strong value for a starting pitcher or other areas of need. I don’t want them to trade him.
@AJ_Lich 1. The Nats no longer giving CJ a chance to show he can be a real SS to the league is them prioritizing better defense (ideally for the long term in Washington) over his trade value. Shortstops are more valuable than second basemen. In trades and in free agency.

This. We do not need to replenish the farm system. The team is on the precipice of being a true contender even without a pitching staff this year. They have a better +/- than 4 teams in the playoff picture. Invest now.
So I decided to dig a little deeper into the pipeline update… the Nats are one of only two teams with 24 players rated at 45 or higher. The Nats also now have 9 players rated at 50 or higher… last year they only had 4. Toboni doing very well with this organization top to
@BranPart Correct. They have given up trying to convince people he will turn into one, which they had been doing, to keep his value higher. Instead they are opting to move him to second base to prepare him for what will give them the most value in 2027. Hence the point.

@BranPart Shortstops are more valuable in both free agent and trade markets than second basemen. By admitting he’s not a long term SS option and no longer trying to frame him as a SS asset, you are devaluing him as a trade asset.

Certainly not worth much. I always found 2B more fun to play than SS.

Maybe a good sign for long term stay in Washington? Maybe not.
I don’t want them to necessarily trade King…nor do I think it imminent but if he has a good month his value goes up if they deem home expendable for a SP.
