The EU’s highest court has ruled that VPNs are legal tools, and VPN companies cannot be blamed simply because users employ them to bypass geo-blocks. The ruling stems from a copyright case involving Anne Frank’s writings. A Belgian website published some of her manuscripts online but blocked visitors from the Netherlands, where parts of the work remain protected by copyright until 2037. Anne Frank’s rights holders argued the site was still breaking the law because users could bypass the block with a VPN. The court disagreed and ruled that a website using effective geo-blocking cannot be held responsible if some users circumvent it with a VPN. The judges also affirmed that VPNs are legitimate privacy tools.

‼️ The European Commission has allowed a citizens' initiative demanding EU law keep digital ID and age verification voluntary, privacy-preserving and non-discriminatory for accessing online services. The initiative called 'Stop Killing The Internet: No Digital ID & No Age Verification' now needs 1 million signatures across at least 7 member states within 12 months. Once the target is hit, Brussels must formally answer, right as it rolls out the EU Digital Identity Wallet and pilots its age-verification app.

🇪🇺‼️🚨 EU BREAKS OWN RULES TO FORCE THROUGH CHAT CONTROL! The EU really wants to force the law that would allow them to read EVERY chat message! It has failed multiple times already and they still keep pushing it through. This is not right! Thanks to @MartinSonneborn for the fight. The man needs support.

CHAT CONTROL IS BACK → Today the urgent procedure for Chat Control 1.0 was passed. NEXT UP: The EU Parliament is voting on Thursday. If Chat Control passes: your messages, pictures, videos will all be scanned because the law will require it - this removes privacy and welcomes mass surveillance in the EU. What's happening? If Chat Control is passed, it will force client-side scanning - so companies will have to scan the contents of private communications, including encrypted messages and emails, before they are sent. In March, it was voted against, but it's back and it was pushed through via urgent procedure. This changes the rules of the vote (of course to be in favour of chat control). Shockingly, blocking it now requires absolute  majority 361 out of the Parliament's 720 members, to be rejected. This is hard to reach because: ‼️ People who do not vote are AUTOMATICALLY VOTED AS YES-VOTE in this procedure. ‼️ This was tactfully done: it's the summer break, this makes it even harder to reach 361 no-votes. 🇪🇺 The EU just passed Chat Control 1.0 in Brussels. Platforms can now scan your private messages again, officially "voluntary," in practice blanket surveillance. Here's the democratic scandal: 314 MEPs voted against it. Only 276 voted for it. It passed anyway... because an absolute majority of all MEPs was required to reject it, not just a majority of those present. More people voted no than yes. It still passed. Pushed through on an urgent procedure just before summer recess, when absences are highest and attention is lowest. This is how rights disappear folks.
