Literary Jesus died to provide believers a psychological method to purify their guilt from sin Hebrews 9:1-14 explains that the guilty conscience was the one thing that remained, even after giving gifts and sacrifices You have to pay close attention to 9:14 as it’s a rhetorical question: “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Think about your own guilt There is no act outside of your own actions, that can purify your guilty conscience, not even the blood of Jesus or Yogi Bear will work So, many verses states that the cross is a weight to “bear”. (The weight of guilt) Which then leads to Matthew 10:38, 16:24 and 1 Peter 2:21 Paraphrasing - Lift up your cross of burden and follow Jesus Where? Not where but “through” what? John 14:6 δι’ ἐμοῦ = “through me” / “by means of me.” Follow Jesus through his process of guilt purification Carry the burden of your guilt (cross) until you can’t take it any more (as if dead) (The “three day death” just represents time. Depending on the weight of your guilt, the process might take a few hours or ten years.) Repent with genuine remorse and the purifying tears (“flow rivers of living waters”) become the baptism of the Holy Spirit aka Holy Ghost (Psalm 30:5, Psalm 126:5-6, Isaiah 25:8, Revelation 21:4 & *Gad 5:6–11) The believer will know when the process is complete as the burden of guilt no longer exists, just as a new born child enters the world without guilt Then the believer may then proceed to the father and make his requests made known (Philippians 4:6)
