@Samuel_Lloyds@SRDorman Ours is 1897 and it was built into the flats and stair. Gas arrived in the city, commercially, as early as 1818. The gas supply wasn't municipal until late 1890s and stair lighting was therefore only something provided by proprietors themselves before then.

@Edinburgh_Walks A newspaper describes it at "the foot of Tolbooth Wynd". Funny it's not a name I had heard but when you look for it, it comes up frequently as a name for the bridge.
