Part of the issue is that you have one party representing something more like the publics economic policy but not their social policy, while the other party does the opposite. Each party represents one aspect of what the overwhelming majority of the public wants, and then focus on giving them the bits that come part of that package deal that the public don't actually want.
@blaiklockBP Saying left-wing vs right-wing confuses the question. Historically people have been more economically left wing and socially right wing. Had it been down to the public, we'd be a virtual ethostate with a welfare state that hanged child rapists and took a dim view of homosexuals.

It's so tiresome... in conversations on different peoples today, you have the insistant pushback that everybody is an individual and there are no generalisations, certainly no negative ones you can make about groups. Here we have this jewish sociologist in 1979 opening with how the Jews have a Jewish Weltanschaung (worldview) and that plays out in various characteristic ways in the world. OK, Hitler...
This should be good, after covering gypsies attitude to work, we have a chapter by this Jewish sociologist on British Jews... It's written in the 70s, so things like being taxi drivers was more of a thing than it is today.
I haven't read anything on gypsies before, but what stands out most here is how knowing and intentional this book describes the stereotypes being used. Because they can get money from government and charities, they are poor putupon outsiders who need help to do better, other time they are exotic, other times they are threatening, other times they blend in... but all as part of a conscious learned performance, an exctension of their focus on being able to bargain and get the best price.
OK, so this is some strained, dense academic writing... but it is basically the leftie academic version of what more articulate ethnonationalists currently say in response to the pretence that it is confusing what an Englishman is, or why a 2nd generation Pakistani isn't "us". This stuff is obvious, even to leftwing academics, until it becomes inconvenient.
