Extension is valuable when it helps us understand why a pitch behaves the way it does. It becomes less useful when it is treated as a universal mechanical target. It is largely an outcome of the athlete’s structure, movement strategy, release pattern, and how efficiently they carry force down the mound. When the delivery is working well, the release point tends to show up where the body can support it. Problems begin when the number itself becomes the goal. A pitcher who tries to manufacture more extension may naturally compensate by pushing off the rubber, reaching with the lead leg, or forcing the torso farther toward the plate. While that might create the appearance of getting farther down the mound, it can disrupt the timing and sequence that allowed the athlete to rotate and accelerate efficiently in the first place. The result can be a less advantageous position at landing, earlier torso rotation, poorer direction, and a release point that is farther forward without actually improving the quality or efficiency of the throw. The goal is not to manufacture a release point closer to the hitter. It is to allow extension to emerge from a delivery that matches the athlete’s structure and natural movement preferences.

Not every command issue needs a mechanical solution. A lot of the time, the pitch itself is fine and the visual simply needs to be recalibrated.⁠ Pitchers build an internal relationship between where they look, where they intend to start the pitch, and where the ball ultimately finishes. When a pitch is consistently missing in one direction, changing that visual can shift the starting line without asking the athlete to consciously manipulate the grip, release, or movement pattern.⁠ This becomes especially useful with breaking balls. A pitcher who repeatedly yanks a slider glove side may not need to “stay through it,” hold onto it longer, or change the way the pitch is thrown. Starting the visual higher and farther arm side can give the pitch more room to develop and allow the body to solve the adjustment on its own.⁠ The visual acts as a task constraint. It changes the athlete’s intent, and the movement begins to organize around that new target without filling their head with additional mechanical instructions.⁠ There are obviously times when poor execution is coming from the grip, release, or delivery. But when the pitch shape is good and the miss is consistent, changing the visual is often the cleanest place to start.⁠

Although a good portion of command issues can be improved by cleaning up the athletes movement patterns, there are other avenues we can look at too. It’s important for pitchers to understand that they don’t have the same luxury as hitters. A hitter can go in the cage and get multiple rounds of swings in throughout the day. Pitchers don’t really have that same option because of the demands of the throwing motion. We only have so many throws before more work starts to become more harm than good. For most guys, that means only getting on the mound 1-2 times a week. So with that being said, it’s incredibly important to be mindful of the reps that we do have, and not just look at situations like catch play as simply a “warm-up.” Again, it’s not about being perfect. It’s more about throwing with clear intent more often, understanding what the miss is telling you, and allowing those reps to set you up for success later.

When it comes to throwing out base runners, quickness only matters if the body is organized enough to use it.⁠ A lot of catchers rush the process because they think the ball has to get out as fast as possible. But if we are patient to let the ball come to us, the exchange can get messy, the arm can get forced, and the throw loses direction.⁠ Letting the ball travel allows the catcher to make the transfer deeper and cleaner. The glove turns into the hand, the ball gets exchanged closer to the body, and the arm has a better chance to work on time.⁠ From there, the feet have to put the throw in position. The left knee turns in to help get the hips in line, the right foot makes the first move, and the left foot lands slightly open toward the bag.⁠ The goal is to create a transfer and footwork pattern that lets the catcher gain ground, get aligned, and throw through the target.⁠

A lot of times when guys feel disorganized late in the delivery, the issue isn’t the upper half or the arm itself. Typically, it starts earlier in the delivery when they never actually organize properly through the initial move and leg lift. If the torso starts dumping forward, the pelvis starts leaking, or the lift leg gets rushed without any real gather, the athlete usually falls apart late in the kinetic sequence. Getting the “toes to the sky” is less about the foot or toes specifically, and more about what it can do to help the athlete find a better position at peak leg lift. When the toes come up, the athlete will naturally find a more stacked position, a better posterior tuck of the pelvis, and a better overall position to move into the linear phase of the delivery.

Triple extending out of the trail leg is a common flaw we see in a lot of pitchers, and a lot of the time it comes back to how they’re organizing in their initial move and leg lift. As the athlete is gathering into leg lift, if they drop into the backside too early and get into too much flexion before creating any real move down the mound, they can end up getting stuck over the back leg. Once that happens, the body has to find a way out, which is usually where you’ll see the push, jump, or triple extension out of the backside. Ideally, we want the athlete to stay a little taller as they gather, find more hip extension at peak leg lift, and then descend into flexion as they start moving down the mound. That gives them a better chance to rotate downhill and into the ground, rather than stalling out on the backside and having to jump out of that position.

Nothing gets paid out until the lead leg block.⁠ ⁠ There is a massive misconception that energy transfer is already happening early in the delivery. In reality, before the front foot gets down, the athlete is mostly creating momentum, organizing segments, and building the position they are going to land in.⁠ ⁠ Leg lift, hand break, trunk position, pelvis orientation, glove side, stride direction, all of it is setting up the transfer.⁠ ⁠ The actual exchange starts to show up when the lead leg accepts force, stabilizes, and gives the pelvis something to rotate against. That is where the throw starts to turn forward momentum into rotational speed up the chain.⁠ ⁠ This is where a lot of lower-level throwers get themselves in trouble. They try to create velocity too early. They muscle up in the upper half, force aggressive counter-rotation, over-pull the glove side, or try to hit positions before the body is actually ready to rotate.⁠ ⁠ Instead of riding down the slope and letting the delivery organize, everything gets tight or rushed too soon. The upper half starts leading the throw before the lower half has given it anything useful to transfer from.⁠ ⁠ When you watch high-level throwers from this angle, the early delivery usually looks a lot less forced than people expect. The body is moving with intent, but it is not trying to create all of the speed before front foot plant.⁠ ⁠ The goal is to relax into positions, ride the slope with rhythm, and give the body a chance to land in a position where the lead leg can actually block, redirect, and transfer energy up the chain.⁠ ⁠ Everything before that is setup. The lead leg block is where the delivery starts to cash in.

Force plate data shows that the lead leg block is one of the biggest determinants of how much energy transfers up the chain. Most people only think about it in the frontal plane: how well the lead leg accepts force and controls knee flexion after landing. But blocking is multi-planar. If the lead leg leaks outward in the transverse plane, the pelvis never truly decelerates into the femur. Instead of force being redirected up the chain, it keeps spinning, which can show up as lost stability, early rotation, and less energy transferred into the throw. That’s where these variations come in. The goal is to improve the athlete’s ability to own the lead leg, control rotation, and redirect force instead of bleeding it. 1. Quadruped Hip Shift 2. Copenhagen Plank A better block isn’t just a stiffer front leg. It’s the ability to accept force, control rotation, and give the rest of the body something stable to rotate around.

What allows a hitter to be successful for over a decade in the big leagues? With Bryce Harper, a big part of it is that the contact quality has never really gone away. The swing has changed, the body has changed, the league has adjusted to him over and over again, but when he gets a pitch he can handle, the ball still comes off his bat with real intent. Harper has been able to keep producing high-end exit velocities, hard contact, and barrel rates across multiple stages of his career. It’s not just one hot season or one version of himself that worked. He’s found ways to keep his best traits alive while continuing to adapt around them. For young hitters, that’s an important thing to understand. It’s not enough to have bat speed, strength, or a good swing when everything feels perfect. The best hitters are able to keep finding ways to create damage as pitchers adjust, their body changes, and the game keeps asking different questions.

Uncommitted sophomore Ethan Lapointe working through a mound blend bullpen. For us, a mound blend is where we start to take some of the drill work we’ve been using and blend it into a real bullpen setting. The goal is to bridge the gap between the adaptions we’re chasing in drill work and the actual execution of a pitch off the mound. Drills can help create awareness, but at some point the athlete has to be able to take that feel into the delivery, throw the baseball, and use ball flight as feedback to further the adaptions.
