I want to thank everyone that took the time to read and constructively comment on my experiences living in South Texas and my frustration with the GOP's make-believe "border invasion". The realities of life in South Texas and the Republican myth-making simply don't line up. The biggest misconception is the "invasion" part. What many people don't realize is that Republicans like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott are over-eager to militarize our border. Using false narratives like "invasion" and "taking over our cities" are lies designed to justify their actions. They misrepresent migrants saying that they are "MS-13 members and terrorists, drug dealers and rapists". The misleading language serves to dehumanize and "otherize" migrants. The "pro-life" GOP strings concertina wire and float buoys designed to maim and drown them. This a page right out of Hitler's playbook. In the Trump Reich... migrants are the "evil, polluting our nation's blood". Hitler made Jews the scapegoats... but this is the "modern" white supremacist play. My previous article attracted a lot of hate, some really vile posts. MAGA types love the border "invasion" narrative. It allows them to freely express their hatred and fear of people of color under the guise of national security... allowing them to mask their unbridled racism. They are very attached to their beard, so much that they will make death threats to a resident that challenges their misguided, misinformed and maladjusted worldview. If you visit Texas cities you will not see migrants taking them over. You will see life as usual, going on as it has everyday for many, many years. You will find homeless people on every corner, yes. Rather than migrants, these homeless are veterans, discarded by the government after their service and the mentally ill, discarded by a weak and ineffective health care system that is the worst of all civilized nations. Many citizens of Eagle Pass, Texas (population 25,500) are weary of the phony military staging and misuse of the National Guard by Abbott... Jesse Fuentes, Eagle Pass resident, wrote... "We, the citizens of Eagle Pass, do hereby request that you vacate Shelby Park and return it back to us, the citizens of Eagle Pass, who are the rightful owners of the property," Fuentes said. "It is an affront to the U.S. and us as taxpayers of this great state that you have seized our public park, that is controlled by everyone, to support an extreme, partisan political agenda that endangers our families." He said the park has been "turned into a military-style staging area" being used as a "backdrop for political theater," criticizing that local residents can "no longer use our park for fishing, kayaking, flea markets, barbecues, quinceaneras or even to have our children play." Fuentes has owned a kayak business since 2015, hosting races every summer and river tours throughout the year. Lately, the only people getting on his kayaks are journalists who want to see buoys in the water or razor wire on the banks leading to Shelby Park. The ridiculous "Take Back Our Border Convoy"... which was supposed to be "thousands of patriot vehicles" showed up down here with only about 100 car loads of Trump fans. They drank (a lot), listened to Ted Nugent (eeeew), watched Dr. Phil's helicopter fly over (woo hoo) and threw beer cans everywhere. They didn't encounter any migrants because, during their visit, as most days, the border is pretty quiet. So they left, and left us a disgusting mess to clean up (thanks). Trump supporters are made in his image, a bunch of narcissists that care about no-one but themselves. The border was at its quietest in 40+ years under the Obama Administration. Trump enjoyed the "after glow" of Obama through 2018 (under 400k crossings) ... but in 2019 crossings and apprehensions more than doubled to 852k. By the end of The Trump Administration, the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation wrote that "illegal border crossings are now 6 times what Obama considered a crisis". Trump fudged one questionable success. A reduction in immigration. Actually a reduction in LEGAL immigration, making it harder for legitimate applicants to enter. That was far easier than reducing illegal immigration. But he sold it as a "win" and his gullible supporters lapped it up like kittens with a saucer of Ivermectin. There is no doubt there is a greater number of people showing up at our border now. Pent up people are ready to try again now that COVID is in the rear view mirror. Trump's pipe dream of a border wall, proved to be easily scaleable and defeated with common tools... at least in places where it didn't fall over in a high wind. What everyone leaves out of the equation are the deteriorating conditions in Guatemala and Honduras where the preponderance of migrants come from. But as we will discuss in a minute... Republicans have no desire whatsoever to slow or mitigate the numbers at the border. These migrants aren't MS-13, they aren't terrorists, they certainly aren't the hordes of Haitian Cannibals" that Republicans were clutching their pearls about last week. Remember that BS? They are families for the most part, from Guatemala and Honduras. Their motivations for leaving are political violence, lack of opportunities, human rights abuses, climate change and natural disasters. They want a better life, just like our ancestors did. Instead of showing up at Ellis Island without an appointment, these people show up at Eagle Pass, or Del Rio, or any number of border checkpoints without an appointment, without papers, armed only with dreams of a better life. But even with heavier border traffic, the Republican "invasion" nonsense isn't close to being true. Our communities at the border are peaceful. Life continues as usual. There are the unwanted GOP trappings of armed military walking the streets, clogging restaurants and filing all the hotels. The military presence along with visits by radicalized, self-appointed white supremacist would be border guards is the real "invasion". Please realize that it is very easy to show a video clip of 20 migrants running scared from Border Patrol and cry "invasion" a video clip has a very myopic view. One little group of people along a 2,000+ mile border is nothing, it is something that happens every day. It is by no means an invasion. It isn't a threat to national security. It is just the border, as it has been through my 50+ years. It ebbs, it flows, people come to work the fields. Do criminals get in? Sure they do. Migrants as a group commit a very small percentage of US crimes. The GOP propaganda machine tries to frighten their base by emphasizing a handful of crimes committed by migrants, while altogether ignoring the vast majority of crimes committed by US citizens. The tragic death of Laken Riley gets top billing with the GOP... the same group that completely ignored or downplayed the killing of Breonna Taylor in her sleep by incompetent police officers. The GOP focus is, as it has always been, on how white people are threatened by the "others". They have never found a better or deeper well of "others" than the migrants at our Southern border. Yet, while they wail and cry about the terror visited on us by the "others" they block bi-partisan legislation to increase border security, because they want to run on the "invasion" for the November election. They cry "invasion"... but it apparently isn't THAT urgent, apparently it can wait until the election because the least productive Congress in the history of our nation really needs to hold on to their seats... so they can continue to collect paychecks for doing nothing. While the "invasion" scam is a ruse... a political ploy, it is not, however, a victimless crime. The military, cosplay militias (Gravy Seals) and white supremacists have clogged our communities, the rhetoric is causing morale and mental health issues, the lies are hurting our business opportunities. Republicans only govern for their base... if we get hurt in the process, they could care less. They don't govern to make Americans' lives better... they govern to increase and maintain their own power. I will conclude with this... What are normally very peaceful, quiet towns along the Texas border have been turned into movie sets to sell the Republican fiction... as this article states "Eagle Pass is being invaded by Christian Nationalists, not migrants.
