One truth about how AI is impacting the workforce is that it's hard to talk about. Earlier this week at Davos, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told the WSJ, “I don’t think there’s an awareness at all of what is coming here and the magnitude of it,” adding unemployment could hit 10%. Today Amazon outlined its second phase of 30k job cuts, or 9% of corporate, that were announced last October. At the time, Jassy was clear the reductions were “not even really AI driven,” but rather tied to culture and a push to become leaner and more agile. His response reveals a truth about AI’s impact on the workforce. Despite the explanation, the reality is AI is the primary driver of a leaner organization. His comments underscore how difficult it is for the C suite to talk openly about AI impacting jobs given the negative effect those statements could have on the mindset of remaining employees.

@SymoneBeez @ErmiaSSS888 I have been in government technology my entire career across 5 different organizations. There is always abacklog of projects that could last 10+years with no new work. There is so much work and government will adopt slower, so... You we have a lot of runway and a lot to build.

@SymoneBeez Yeah, and it will shift to AI very soon. I believe security is one of the most likely areas in IT operations to be largely automated. So, I would tell people to look a different route unless they love the non-technical side of security (policies, governance, risk, audits, etc ).

@SymoneBeez The skill is also knowing when to double down versus let go. Many of the things that blow up are around for long time before they take off. Blockchain/crypto, quantum, robotics, VR/AR, AI, etc. But there is a defining moment. Identify that and you control your destiny.

@alliekmiller Claude Code for Business Users but not available for the OS most businesses use... I wonder if they release on MacOS first to limit usage while they improve. I love MacOS but can't use it at work. So my feedback is, release a Windows app.

I like the idea of work-life integration. But you have to be lucky enough to do something you enjoy or at least like the mental stimulation of. Working in technology, most of my career I have been essentially on-call 24/7 and do a lot of my learning on my own time. Stress comes from the people and politics, not the work or workload. Not saying it is easy, but it can be enjoyable. And people who enjoy what they do don't typically go around talking or really thinking about work-life balance.

I always like to pitch work-life integration instead. While there are fields that work-life balance makes sense, I feel integration more actually reflects people who work in fields that are passionate about. My personal life does not stop when in the office, and my work life does not stop when I leave the office. But I want to make a difference in my role and want to be one of the best at what I do, so that requires that I find my work interesting enough to naturally read, tinker, and work when inspiration hits.
