Everyone's still racing to make the model bigger. We bet two years ago the wins were somewhere else entirely - in what the agent does with its memory. This week two labs published the proof. Independently. Same week. Neither cites the other. Stanford's AutoMem (Wu et al., 2026) treated memory management as a skill the model learns, not a pipeline engineers hand-tune. Optimizing that memory skill alone - base model untouched: gave a 2–4× jump. The lever isn't the model. It's what manages the memory. The second, Janus (Chen et al., 2026), is a plug-in gate that accepts a memory update only when it improves future behavior - not just the task in front of it. +2.7 to +4.6 accuracy across six datasets, two backbones, two updaters. It exists because naive consolidation regresses. The same failure that makes a frontier model forget 54% of problems it had already solved once an LLM "updates" its memory (Zhang et al., 2026). Put the two together and you have the architecture: Learn the skill. Then gate every update on whether it still helps a year from now. Capture what happened. Keep what helps. Let the rest decay. Day 1,000 should be better than Day 1. We're building this as a product, not a paper. Taking a handful of enterprise design partners - teams whose agents have to remember users for years, not sessions - and opening a small closed alpha. DM me, or comment "alpha".
