A $500 Adidas running shoe is banned from official competition, and Adidas built it that way on purpose. Then they put it on a runner who used it to do something no human had ever done: cover 100 kilometers, about 62 miles, in under six hours. The shoe is the Adizero Prime X Evo, the one in this clip. Competitive racing has a ceiling: a shoe’s sole can be no thicker than 40 millimeters, because thick foam works like a spring and hands runners free speed. The rule keeps races fair. This one stacks 50 millimeters under the heel, nearly two inches of foam, ten over the limit. Almost every fast racing shoe since 2017 hides a stiff carbon plate in the foam, a spring that flicks your foot forward with each step. Adidas took the plate out. In its place they wrapped a thin band of carbon around the rim of the sole, there to keep your foot steady on all that soft foam. The foam is a stretchy plastic they made 35% lighter than their last racing version. The whole shoe ends up around 138 grams in a men’s size 9, less than a baseball, on a sole almost two inches tall. For the record run, Adidas added one more step. They sealed the shoes in a pressurized tank for days, keeping the tiny air bubbles in the foam at a set pressure. The shoes stayed in the tank until minutes before the runner laced up, so none of that spring would leak out from sitting around. The runner was Sibusiso Kubheka, a 27-year-old South African. He set the time last August in Italy, running overnight on a track built for testing supercars. The pair on his feet was a prototype, its sole even taller than the 50 millimeters Adidas now sells. He held a 5 minute 47 second mile for all 62 miles. No break. That works out to a 2 hour 32 minute marathon, run more than twice over. He crossed at five hours, 59 minutes, and 20 seconds, more than six minutes under the official world record. And none of it counts. The run used a pace car and a crew handing out water on the move, and the shoe breaks the 40 millimeter rule. The same engineering that carried a person under six hours for the first time is the exact reason the clock can never be made official.

The UK just “smashed” its May temperature record… but here’s the part the Met Office conveniently leaves out: The PREVIOUS record was set in 1922. That’s 104 years ago. Long before SUVs, private jets, or modern CO₂ emissions. Heathrow Airport didn’t even exist yet. The area was literally farmland and small villages. So if a 1922 heatwave could produce nearly identical temperatures in a world with ~130 ppm less CO₂, maybe, just maybe, natural variability plays a much bigger role than the panic merchants admit.
