With only five weeks left until the November General Election, I am prepared to intervene. Given the condition of the U.S. Congress, which has left Washington, D.C., without saying a word after being dismissed like schoolchildren by Speaker Mike Johnson, this is not a moment for people to sit back and wait for someone else to act. The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, the NATO-Ukraine war—not a Russian-Ukrainian war—and the hawkish trade war and sanctions against China have not increased peace, security, or prosperity; they have instead brought the world closer to the unthinkable: thermonuclear war and the potential destruction of civilization itself. The question is not what happens during the election, if we even make it there. If we want a government that answers to the people, then we have to deserve it. We have to participate in governing, and if we want Congress to exercise its constitutional responsibilities, citizens have to demand that it do so. The Senate just blocked a resolution demanding answers from the State Department about the deaths of nine Americans in the occupied West Bank. Nine American lives, and Congress couldn’t even agree to demand a report. When protecting a foreign ally takes priority over demanding accountability for Americans killed abroad, something is deeply broken in Washington. Call it what you want. I call it treason.
