No, like many things it's more complicated than that. There's an illegal immigration problem in the US because the quality of life is so high compared to other countries and there is a lot of freedom in America. Migrants choose to break the law, cross the border illegally, & work in poor conditions because even that is better than where they came from, but in our country we consider those conditions to be "slave-like" or "modern slavery" since coyotes (human traffickers from Mexico) exploit this and promise opportunity to the migrants. Some people vote for politicians that want to let everyone in and not enforce the laws around immigration because they believe it's more sympathetic for the illegal migrants to do that, and they turn a blind eye to the negative consequences. Others instead vote for politicians who want to enforce immigration laws & defend the borders so that human trafficking & illegal labor with poor conditions is prevented, and the first group attacks the second group because they believe that is not being sympathetic enough for the migrants. Thus, it's a vicious cycle of political policy debates about which set of policies is more humane. "Modern slavery" is slightly different than chattel slavery and refers to situations where individuals are exploited and cannot refuse or leave due to threats, coercion, deception, or abuse of power. There is roughly an estimated 50 million people living in modern slavery on Earth and about 12 % of them are in China and about 2 % of them are in the US. Both countries (the USA & China) ended chattel slavery in the years I described previously (China 116 years ago in 1910, after doing it for about 3,500 years; the US 161 years ago in 1865, after doing it for about 246 years).
