#PostOfficeScandal This morning @BBCEmmaSimpson reported on @BBCBreakfast hosted by @jonkay01 & @sallynugent about the case of @PostOffice Scandal victim @Janetsk20073533 Janet is one of the worst affected people by this scandal. It is exactly the type of case I mentioned in my letter to new Minister Blair McDougall of @biztradegovuk just last week. Over 20 years of suffering, conviction overturned in April 2021, claim took years to put together because the Post Office demanded not one, not two but FIVE medical reports, which from a recent hearing they have finally accepted. Rather than refuse to co-operate with such an unreasonable request, Janet painstakingly provided the reports which I am sure were traumatic in themselves, reliving everything over again. Unlike them she is being fair. The retired Judge in her scheme Sir Gary Hickinbottom should have been made to intervene & put a stop to this nonsense. Just because they didn’t like the contents of the report doesn’t mean they had the right to keep asking for more, they hoped eventually one would side with them. No other words to say other than ‘disgusting.’ The government are as bad as the Post Office when it comes to redress. No one can understand what Janet has suffered because they are not in her shoes. But many have lived the scandal in their own right. I submitted my own claim in June 2023, 27 months ago. Similar to Janet my 1st offer was 12.5%. It has taken until recently to get that offer above 50% & I am still going. The 2nd Independent panel hearing will be next month & then a potential referral to another retired Judge, Sir Ross Cranston if need be. I really hope Janet hasn’t got 2 years or more left to go on her claim. This all needs to stop and it needs to stop now. The governments claim that it makes every effort to make full & fair offers to all claimants is laughable & total b*******❗️They use every legal argument they can think of even when the next one they use contradicts the first. In a @BBCNews piece by @BBCEmmaSimpson she wrote :- Disabled Post Office Horizon victim offered 15% of claim‼️ A victim of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal who was temporarily paralysed after the stress of her ordeal has been offered 15% of her compensation claim. Janet Skinner was wrongly convicted of false accounting in 2007 & sentenced to 9 months in prison after the faulty software said £59,000 had gone missing from her branch account in Hull. She has now received an offer of full financial redress - but it is a fraction of what she had claimed. "I cried and I cried… it's trauma on top of trauma," she told the BBC. The government said it made every effort to make full & fair offers to all claimants. But according to Ms Skinner's lawyer, all the high-value complex claims are being fought "tooth and nail". "They've taken a particularly cruel approach to Janet's case," claims Simon Goldberg, from Simons Muirhead Burton. The mother-of-two lost her home, her livelihood & served two months in prison. A year after her release, she was back in the dock facing another jail sentence as the Post Office pursued her for failing to pay "proceeds of crime". Less than a fortnight after the matter was resolved, she suffered a neurological collapse, was paralysed from the neck down & used a wheelchair for a year. "My immune system had broken down, basically my body attacked itself," said Ms Skinner. It took her two years to learn how to walk again but she has been unable to work because of ongoing problems with her health & mobility issues. "I'm in pain all the time. It's changed my life completely," she said. Her conviction was quashed in 2021 but it has taken more than four & a half years to prepare her claim, including being asked to submit five medical reports. Simon Goldberg of Simons Muirhead Burton has written to Darren Jones MP, who he says was a champion of the wronged sub-postmasters while in opposition. He is now effectively the Prime Minister's right hand man. "The only way to resolve this is political pressure from the very top," said Mr Goldberg.
