Great question. I asked our team about this, and apparently the surgeon (and endocrinologist, possibly) were dismissed from the suit for a procedural reason, but Aldaco's legal team immediately appealed it. The appeal's still working its way up to the courts, so they're not off the hook!

Texas Supreme Court just ruled that detransitioner Soren Aldaco's lawsuit against the therapist who wrote her “top surgery” letter can proceed. The Court held that the claims against Barbara Rose Wood and Thriveworks are not time-barred. The case will now move forward on the merits. A meaningful step toward accountability for clinicians who facilitate experimental, permanent medical interventions.

Reuters (June 17): The FTC and four states have sued WPATH, alleging the organization made misleading statements about the benefits of gender-affirming care for minors — including overstating its role in suicide prevention — and that financial incentives played a part in pushing for broader insurance coverage. This is a huge deal. The Texas Supreme Court unanimously overturned the lower court's decision to dismiss Soren's malpractice case. Texas has a 2-year statute of limitations and her case was initially dismissed because lower court said the clock started when her doctors wrote the letter recommending her for mastectomy. Soren's lawyers argued that the clock started when the actual harm occurred - when she underwent surgery to get her breasts removed. Since Texas law defines the 2 year window as starting from "the date of the alleged negligence/wrongful act," Soren's case was obviously consistent with this definition - the "alleged negligent/wrongful act" was surgically removing her breasts. The lower courts' decision was clearly absurd and likely politically motivated. It's crazy this whole thing even had to go to the Texas Supreme Court. But still a huge win.

Feeling uncomfortable in your body as a teen is normal, not a medical emergency. Children can't consent to blockers or hormones, there is no reliable way to predict who will regret it later, and the medical risks — including infertility & lifelong health issues — are very real.

Doctors at Children’s Hospital Colorado are refusing to provide gender-affirming care to minors — even after a court order — because they fear losing their licenses or facing criminal charges. When the actual medical providers won’t do it, maybe we should listen.

Dear Lush (cc Chelmsford City Council), As a woman who had half a breast removed last year due to cancer, I am writing to raise my concerns about your “Proud of My Stripes” window display. I am also, on behalf of other women who have experienced breast cancer, respectfully requesting its removal. Because mastectomies are not a fashion statement, an identity marker or something to be celebrated. They are something women undergo because they are ill, because they are frightened, because they are trying to stay alive. Around 59,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year. Many will undergo surgery - a mastectomy, lumpectomy or other procedure. Others choose preventive mastectomies because they carry a high-risk BRCA gene mutation. If a woman chooses to have her breasts removed to affirm a gender identity, that is her personal choice. I honestly don’t know the number of women who have elective mastectomies for this reason. What I do know is that it is a tiny number compared with those for whom breast surgery is medically necessary and not something to be celebrated. I think I speak for many women who have experienced breast cancer - and for their families - when I say this: Breast removal surgery is not something I regard as cute, playful or empowering. Nor is it something I believe retailers should be celebrating. For that reason, I am requesting that the display be removed and that @ChelmsCouncil apologise for promoting it on social media. @acluohio You call this an “anti-trans settlement.” We call it a major hospital finally being held responsible for causing documented harm. $2M towards restorative care for detransitioners and a 20-year ban on youth transitions says more than a press release ever could.

When a major children’s hospital agrees to pay $2 million and stop providing gender-affirming care to minors for 20 years, maybe the problem wasn’t “bigotry.” Maybe it was the actual medical outcomes.

We are deeply saddened by the Cleveland Clinic’s $2 million settlement with the Department of Justice (DOJ), the result being that the Clinic will withhold, for at least the next 20 years, science-based, gender-affirming care to children and families in need.
