Biden always attached himself to whatever the dominant strain of thought was from day to day within the Democratic Party. He was an anti-Vietnam War candidate when he was first elected. In the 1990s he came a Clinton moderate. In 2002, he voted to authorize the Iraq war. In 2020, he latched on to Warrenite types.

Police abolition is foolish. Having no borders is foolish. We should have borders and violent criminals should be deported. If you are “afraid” of stating this because there are people in your party who disagree you probably don’t have what it takes to run in a tough race.

What is ironic about all this DSA criticism of Israel is that historically Zionism was heavily influenced by socialism, at least until the 1970s or so. Israeli institutions such as kibbutzim, the Histadrut trade union, and various parastatal companies were heavily socialist-coded. In his youth, Bernie Sanders famously volunteered on a kibbutz that honored Stalin as "the sun of the nations." The USSR arranged a Czech arms deal for Israel in 1948. And perhaps it worked, sort of? The early Israeli state may not have been the "startup nation," but at least it was (for Jews) a non-dystopian socialist project, quite unlike the Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe.

I don’t think so. That poll suggests that MAGA candidates will beat DSA candidates. And if the GOP moves in a Rubio-like direction that’s even more favorable for the Republicans. We’ve been to this rodeo before. It was called Corbynism. After a kind of open-enrollment system within the Labour Party, the hipster types cooed “oooh, Jeremy Corbyn” at Glastonbury, and the press spiked much ink contemplating whether they were the future. Johnson cleaned his clock.

Additionally, it would be wrong to graft the Israel conflict onto a strict progressive-moderate axis. There are plenty of good reasons for moderates to rethink the US-Israel relationship: whether our foreign aid is being well-spent, for starters. Yet this is a point that older Democratic centrists, such as Hillary Clinton and (especially) Schumer and Jefferies, seem to forget.
