The Nigerian 1999 Constitution, under Sections 68(1)(g) for members of the National Assembly and 109(1)(g) for members of State Houses of Assembly, provides that lawmakers elected on the platform of a political party must vacate their seats if they defect to another party before the end of their tenure, except where there is a division within the party or a merger involving the party. Political defections have become a major concern in Nigeria's democratic process. When elected officials abandon the political parties that brought them into office, many voters feel betrayed and begin to lose confidence in the electoral system. Frequent defections also weaken political institutions and reduce accountability, as politicians often place personal interests above the mandate given to them by the electorate.
