Lots to consider here — and so important. IMO, communication breakdown that takes place at healthcare provider appointments is a *major* (and vastly under-appreciated) reason why patients experience worse outcomes.

@HeartSisters @AbraarKaran Even complicated things can be explained in clear language. It takes time. And it means meeting ppl at their level — not the other way around. Generally, I don’t see the medical community doing that. The medical community needs to LISTEN to patients and families. Let them talk.
@HeartSisters @AbraarKaran I don’t think denial is a primary reason. I go with my family members to their appointments b/c otherwise, communication breaks down almost every time. Providers generally talk way above patients’ heads. And that’s completely unnecessary.
@HeartSisters @AbraarKaran In my experience, there’s often a complete breakdown in communication between provider/patient because the provider assumes the patient knows or understands more than they actually do (whether due to shock, incapacity, or a myriad of other reasons).

@BeyondType1 It happened at the same time as my child was developing a viral infection. In T1D, physiologic glucagon is not released appropriately and amylin is no longer produced -- which is why T1D is so difficult to manage with insulin alone.
@BeyondType1 Yes -- only once -- to treat a low that would not respond to carbs. My child's BG kept dropping and was critically low, even after eating well over 100 carbs. Was the most unusual situation I've seen in our nearly 6 years with T1D.
