England’s historic counties were not created by county councils, Victorian administration or the local government reforms of the 20th century. They are much older. The great majority were already in existence as shires or counties before the Norman Conquest in 1066, with many rooted in the Anglo-Saxon organisation of England. A small number developed later - including Lancashire, Rutland, Cumberland and Westmorland - but the overall picture is clear: England’s historic counties are not recent administrative inventions. They are one of the oldest surviving geographical frameworks of the country. Earlier kingdoms and people-names matter too - Kent, Sussex, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk all have deep roots - but this timeline focuses specifically on when these places became counties or shires. Know your county. Know its story.
