With temperatures soaring today and even more so on Tuesday and Wednesday it's a good opportunity to remind you to carry some water in your car. Incidents on the roads, especially the motorway, can lead to closures and extensive delays where you could be stuck for hours. No matter how short your journey is you need to be prepared. Carry drinking water. If you have children make sure you have some snacks/fruit they can eat. With babies make sure you have all the provisions and supplies you would need if delayed for several hours. Nobody wants to be stuck on the motorway for hours but a miserable few hours stuck in baking heat becomes a lot worse if you are not prepared.

After a mostly wet week the weekend looks dry. A great chance to get the bike out. Remember the weather can change. Set out prepared for any eventuality, with a well maintained machine and the right safety gear. Enjoy the ride and arrive home safely. #Op2Wheel

We started our series of posts supporting #Op2Wheel with a look at the POWDERS checks. The 'S' is sometimes referred to as 'steering and suspension'. Others refer to it as 'self'... as in you. If your machine is checked and fit for the road you must ask yourself if you are. Do you have the right safety gear and is it weather appropriate? How long has it been since your last alcoholic drink? Do you feel ok? Not over tired or feeling unwell. Thousands of riders have also benefited greatly from attending Police BikeSafe (UK) events. BikeSafe isn’t a formal training programme, but a workshop built by bikers, delivered by bikers, for bikers. It’s a police-led initiative where advanced police bikers share their extensive skills and experience, to help you get more out of your riding and enhance your safety. When it comes to motorcycle clothing there's the wrong gear, the right gear, cheap gear and expensive gear. Making the right choice can be the difference between staying safe or catastrophic injury. Do your research. Ensure clothing has the CE standard and always buy from well established and reputable dealers. All motorcycle helmets sold in the UK must comply with at least 1 of these: British Standard BS 6658:1985 and carry the BSI (British Standards Institution) Kitemark UN ECE Regulation 22.05 or 22.06 Any standard accepted by a member of the European Economic Area which offers a level of safety and protection equivalent to BS 6658:1985 and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI Kitemark Then there are a multitude of brands, shapes and styles. It can be hard to know which one is right for you but making the right decision can be the difference between life and death. There are several different types of rider. A lot are daily riders but there are just as many who use their bikes less often; perhaps a sunny evening or a Sunday morning ride with friends. However, you use your machine it needs to be safe and it needs to be roadworthy. Daily checks for bikes are just as important as they are for every other vehicle. Checks for bikes used less often are even more vital. Perhaps visit friends over the weekend for a BBQ and a couple of beers or glasses of wine? Drinking and driving wrecks lives so if you're drinking dont drive. As #OpSpotlight draws to a close it would be remiss of us to not mention mobile phones and driving. There is strong evidence supporting the case that handsfree use of a phone is just as dangerous as handheld. Just because something is not prohibited does not automatically mean it is safe. Never use a phone whilst driving. Stay focussed and stay safe. Ignore messages and alerts, allow calls to go to voicemail and when safe, pull over, park up, switch off the engine and check your messages in safety. #Fatal4

For some drivers, the onset of some lovely weather brings out a tendency to drive faster. Perhaps on country lanes with all the windows down and the music playing. Maybe even with the roof down. However, statistics show that most fatal collisions occur on rural roads and speed remains a high contributory factor.
