The Salomon Zugspitz Ultratrail powered by Ledlenser by UTMB marked the successful debut of the UTMB World Series in Germany last weekend. Over four days of racing, the Zugspitz region around Garmisch-Partenkirchen became an international gathering point for the trail running community. Nearly 5,000 runners from 49 nations took on seven distances ranging from 16 to 107 kilometres, with women representing 31.7 percent of participants. Due to thunderstorms and challenging weather conditions, several courses had to be adapted for safety reasons. The ZUT100, originally planned as a 100-mile race, was shortened to 107 kilometres with 5,280 metres of elevation gain. The Ultratrail and Ehrwald Trail courses were also adjusted on Friday to 74 kilometres and around 3,000 metres of elevation gain respectively, with both races starting in Leutasch this year. The Leutasch Trail, Mittenwald Trail, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail and Grainau Trail were held as planned on their original routes. One of the most emotional moments of the weekend came from local athlete Tobias Fritz. After being forced to withdraw from the ZUT100 last year while leading the race, he returned this year to win the adapted course in 12:04:35. “Winning at home is something very special. My very first trail race was also the ZUT nine years ago. To take the win here now is simply incredible,” said Fritz at the finish line. In the women’s race, Joana Tallmann (pictured) successfully defended her title from last year, winning in 14:26:28. High-level performances were also delivered across the other distances. Silvia Schwaiger won the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail in 2:45:40 and praised the atmosphere along the course: “It is great to have a UTMB race in Germany. The highlights for me were the Zegapa Cheering Zones, where so many spectators were there supporting us.” In the men’s race over the same distance, Dominik Hohenleitner took the win and underlined the importance of the event for the German trail running scene: “It is great that there is now a UTMB race in Germany. The ZUT has always been a major event. By becoming part of the UTMB World Series and gaining more international attention, the event becomes even more important — and that is great for us athletes.” Beyond the sporting performances, the atmosphere was one of the defining features of the weekend. Thousands of spectators created an impressive backdrop in the start and finish areas and at several points along the courses. The “Zegapa” Cheering Zone, organised by the local running community NOMADS, became one of the emotional hotspots of the event, supporting athletes day and night. Jürgen Kurapkat, Race Director of the Zugspitz Ultratrail, reflected positively on the four days of racing: “It was a great, eventful and exciting ZUT. We had a challenging situation with the weather, the heat and the thunderstorms. Our goal was to deliver the seven races in the best possible way and offer all runners a great race experience. I think we achieved that. We are already looking forward to the next Zugspitz Ultratrail by UTMB.” With its first edition as part of the UTMB World Series, the Salomon Zugspitz Ultratrail powered by Ledlenser by UTMB showcased the strength and potential of the German trail running scene. The combination of an international field, a spectacular Alpine landscape and strong support along the course made the event a standout moment in the international trail running calendar. 📷 Credit: CarlesIturbe
parkrun has joined The Nation’s 5K Challenge, the nationwide initiative. Led by endurance athlete Esmée Gummer, the challenge aims to inspire one million people to move while raising funds for charity through free, accessible community 5k events across the UK and Ireland. To drive participation, Esmée will run 5,000km through 77 cities across the UK and Ireland between 27 June to 3 October. As part of the challenge, Esmée will visit 13 local parkrun communities, joining their free weekly 5k events and helping bring people together to walk, jog, run, volunteer and connect in local communities. The challenge has already generated strong public interest, with more than 1,300 people registering for the events within the first 24 hours of sign-ups opening and 3,000 sign-ups to date. The collaboration builds on an existing relationship between parkrun and realbuzz, which is managing registrations and charity partnerships for the nationwide challenge, and reflects a shared commitment to making movement accessible to everyone. Esmée Gummer said: “I’m incredibly grateful for parkrun’s support. Their events have inspired millions of people to get active and feel part of something special, so having them involved in The Nation’s 5K Challenge means so much. This challenge has always been about showing people that movement can be accessible, enjoyable and something that brings communities together. “After being paralysed at 18 and told I would never walk again, I know first-hand how powerful movement can be. That’s one of the reasons this challenge means so much to me and why I’m passionate about encouraging others to take part, whatever their starting point.” Ali McArthur, Global Head of Event Delivery & Volunteering at parkrun, said: “parkrun exists to make physical activity accessible to as many people as possible, and we’re delighted to support Esmée and The Nation’s 5K Challenge. Helping one million people move is an ambitious goal, but it’s one that reflects our shared belief that physical activity should be free, welcoming and accessible. We know that people are more likely to stay active when they feel connected to others, whether through running, walking, volunteering or supporting their local community.” Realbuzz is managing participant registration and charity partnerships for the free nationwide 5k events, with participants given the option to donate when signing up. Fundraising is powered by GoFundMe, providing a simple and secure way for supporters to contribute. Funds raised will be distributed among the official charity partners: 25% to Wings for Life, 25% to Sport in Mind, a portion to parkrun and the remainder to charities selected through a public vote during the challenge. PUMA is bringing PROJECT3, its sub-elite running program, to the 2026 Berlin and Chicago Marathons for the first time. Following an enormously successful string of results since PROJECT3 was first introduced in 2025, PUMA will now give runners the chance to compete for performance-based cash prizes at two of the fastest world marathon majors. PUMA will select 200 runners to be a part of PROJECT3 in Berlin, with a further 100 chosen for Chicago. Once selected, each PROJECT3 participant will have the chance to win $3,000 from PUMA, if they can break their previous marathon personal best time by three minutes or more. The criteria to qualify for PROJECT3 Berlin and Chicago 2026 are as follows: - Female applicants must have a marathon personal best of 3:15 hrs or faster. - Male applicants must have a marathon personal best of 3:00 hrs or faster. - All applicants must be officially registered and have a race bib for the 2026 Berlin and/or Chicago Marathon (PUMA will not provide entry into either of the two races) PROJECT3 was conceived by PUMA to offer sub-elite runners the chance to experience life as a professional athlete, working with PUMA’s performance teams in their training block and trialing PUMA’s most innovative raceday footwear, including the Fast-R NITRO™ Elite 3 and Deviate NITRO™ Elite 4. Participants who were then able to break their previous marathon personal best time by more than three minutes on raceday banked a $3,000 cash prize from the brand. The fastest male and female PROJECT3 finishers would also earn a performance-based bonus from PUMA in each of the previous iterations – and this cash reward will be on offer to the successful applicants of PROJECT3 Berlin and Chicago 2026. PUMA has already welcomed 600 runners to PROJECT3, paying out close to $400,000 in prize money – with nearly a quarter of a million of that cash delivered in 2026 alone – making PROJECT3 by far the most lucrative sub-elite marathon program in history. Applications to be a part of PROJECT3 at the 2026 Berlin and Chicago Marathons are now open via puma-project3.com and close at 00:00 (BST) on Friday 26th June. Applicants will find out if they have been successful by Monday 6th July.

It's official. The 2027 TCS London Marathon will take place over TWO DAYS with 100,000 people. London Marathon Events (LME) today has announced that for one year only, the world‑famous TCS London Marathon will expand into a two‑day event for its 2027 edition. Taking place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April 2027, this one‑off format change will see LME transform the TCS London Marathon - already the most popular marathon on the planet - into a spectacular two-day celebration. The expanded event will further elevate the global impact of the TCS London Marathon, which in 2025 was recognised as the No. 1 marathon brand in the world. The unique Double format will welcome 100,000 participants across the two days, all taking on the same iconic route, from Greenwich to Westminster, in what will be an unprecedented weekend of sport, charity and community celebration. By extending the event across two days, the Double creates more opportunities than ever before to be part of the TCS London Marathon. It will allow a record number of participants to take on a single marathon, helping to meet the extraordinary demand for places - highlighted by the fact that 1.33 million people entered the ballot for next year’s event. The Double will also create the largest fundraising moment in UK sport. Already the world’s largest one-day annual fundraising event, with more than £90 million raised to date for charity by 2026 participants, this two-day marathon will give more charities more opportunities to raise vital funds. The elite women, elite female para-athletes, championship and ‘good for age’ women will lead the mass event one day, with the elite men, elite male para-athletes, championship and ‘good for age’ men leading the mass event the other. All format details will be confirmed in the coming months. Everyone who has already applied to take part next year will be entered into a ballot for both the Saturday and Sunday. Participants will not be allowed to take part in the in-person event on both days, though they will be able to complete the TCS London Marathon one day and the virtual event, TCS London Marathon MyWay, on the other. Ballot results will be announced in early July, with places allocated through a completely random draw. The 2027 TCS London Marathon Double will be a citywide celebration of sport, music, and community, with charity partners, creators and neighbourhood groups shaping activities across both days. A major focus of the Double will be inspiring and supporting the next generation. Every school in London will receive two guaranteed entries for teachers or staff, recognising that the spark to get active often begins in the classroom. All additional income generated by the Double will be distributed by the London Marathon Foundation to projects that inspire activity for children and young people across London and the UK. To ensure local communities share in the occasion, extra guaranteed entries have also been allocated to every London borough along the route, enabling grassroots groups and charities to take part and benefit from the expanded event. The Double will crown a full week of TCS London Marathon celebrations, beginning with an extended TCS London Marathon Running Show and featuring TCS London Marathon & Friday Night Lights 5K. The week will also include the TCS Mini London Marathon - the world’s largest one-day timed children’s event - which in 2027 will take place on Friday 23 April and will welcome more than 20,000 young participants. Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events said: “The 2027 TCS London Marathon Double is our most ambitious evolution to date – a once-in-a-generation one-time-only reimagining of what a marathon and city-wide celebration of activity can be. “By expanding to 100,000 runners across two days, we’re opening the door for more people, more charities and more communities to take part in the world’s greatest marathon. We believe that more than £150m can be raised for good causes and the UK economy will have a £400m social and economic benefit. “We are grateful for the vision and support of the Mayor of London, the councils on the route, the emergency services, and all the stakeholders involved who have given their support to enable this world-first event to be held for London and the UK.” Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “London is the sporting capital of the world and I am delighted that, for one year only in 2027, the world famous TCS London Marathon will expand into a two-day event. “This unique, one-off double will allow a record 100,000 participants to take part across the two days - creating the largest fundraising moment in UK sporting history and supporting the work of so many incredible charities. “The London Marathon showcases the very best of our capital and we will continue working closely with London Marathon Events and our partners to ensure appropriate measures are in place for the entire weekend as we build a better, more prosperous London for everyone.” 📷 London Marathon Events

Runners are preparing to take on the Peak District Ultra Challenge this summer. Taking place in the heart of the Peak District National Park from 4-5 July, the event, which has already seen participants raise over £500,000 for charity, will see around 3,000 runners, walkers and joggers tackle distances ranging from 100km, 50km, 25km and 10 miles. The event starts and finishes at its Bakewell basecamp, with Challengers heading out to explore some of the Peak District’s best-loved scenery. Participants will take in highlights including the historic Chatsworth House estate, the Monsal Trail, and sweeping views across the rugged dales and limestone valleys. Open to all abilities, the Challenge offers participants the opportunity to take on the course solo or as part of a team. While some will run the full distance, many choose to walk or mix walking and running, making it an inclusive event for both seasoned endurance athletes and first-time Challengers. Participants will also be raising funds for a wide range of charities, with the Ultra Challenge Series continuing to be one of the UK’s most popular fundraising platforms, collectively raising millions of pounds each year, and half a million already raised so far for this year’s Peak District event alone. Event organisers, Ultra Challenge, pride themselves on delivering a safe, well-supported experience, with fully marked routes and industry-leading on-course support helping participants every step of the way. As preparation ramps up, strong interest is expected once again, with a vibrant event atmosphere anticipated as local residents line the route to support participants throughout the weekend.

Arc Project has completed its most ambitious project to date: a 24-hour treadmill ultramarathon relay in a decommissioned World War II tank factory in North London. The format had never been attempted anywhere in the world. 160 runners took to 40 treadmills at 10am on Saturday 30 May, competing in teams of four until 10am Sunday. Every team must be two women and two men. This is a hard rule of entry, not a target. Every single team was still running when the clock stopped. Collectively, the 40 teams covered 9,097.3km over 24 hours. Nearly the distance from the UK to Japan. Without leaving a single room. Each of the 24 hours was a distinct experience of light, sound and temperature, curated by a London DJ. Organisers describe the arc across the race as simulating the psychological journey of a psychedelic trip, without the illegal stimulus. The winning team was Salty Boys AC, sponsored by SportShoes, who covered a cumulative distance of 286.08km across the 24 hours. The team comprised Rob Ellis (M, 33), team captain and founder of Salty Boys AC; Katie Heron (F, 34); Charlotte Davies (F, 35); and Konstantin Kissimov (M, 24). Team captain, Rob Ellis said: "Hands down the hardest thing we've ever done. Running from nowhere to nowhere takes a mental toll that's hard to match. AP is just you, vs the treadmill speed gauge, surrounded by other people fighting the same battle. The intensity was on another level." AP4 follows AP3, Arc Project's 600km relay across the entire London Underground network, contested by 150 runners on 29 November 2025, the busiest shopping day of the year. James Taker, Co-Founder of Arc Project, said: “We believe that everyone is capable of doing incredible things. They just need an opportunity and people that believe in them. We do both of those things. AP5 here we come”. Sonni Dyson, Co-Founder of Arc Project, said: "Ultra running has a problem when it comes to female representation, and the industry has spent years talking about it. We decided to try and address it. Every Arc Project has a mandatory 50/50 split. I’m proud of the change we advocate for."
