🗞️New research offers hopeful news for patients with advanced alcohol related liver disease. An international multicentre study led by @MedUni_Wien and published in @JHepatology shows that consistent alcohol abstinence can lead to a remarkable recovery, even in patients with previously decompensated alcohol related cirrhosis. The study analysed 633 patients from 17 specialised centres across Europe and Asia. Within five years, up to one third achieved “recompensation”, meaning complete regression of liver related complications together with recovery of liver function. Key findings • Even advanced cirrhosis is not always irreversible • Early and sustained alcohol abstinence more than doubles the chance of recovery • Patients who recompensated and maintained abstinence had no liver related deaths in the study • Risks of liver cancer and overall mortality were significantly reduced These findings highlight the powerful impact of early intervention and long term support for alcohol abstinence.
