USAP North Texas recently partnered with Catch Up & Read, a literacy nonprofit focused on helping children in underserved communities strengthen their reading skills through access to educational resources. During the organization’s “Stuff the Bag” service project, our North Texas corporate team assembled 1,200 literacy bags filled with books, bookmarks, notepads, pens, and other school supplies to help students stay engaged in reading throughout the summer. The bags included 600 English language kits and 600 Spanish language kits and will be distributed during Catch Up & Read’s Reading Rallies throughout the month. U.S. Anesthesia Partners joined Nova Southeastern University in celebrating the ribbon-cutting of @NSUnews Health's new Nevada Regional Campus in Henderson, a landmark moment for healthcare education and the future of anesthesia care in Nevada. The campus will welcome its first cohort of students this summer, becoming the first university in Nevada to offer an Anesthesiologist Assistant (AA) program. Students enrolled in the AA program at the NSU Nevada Regional Campus will also benefit from the U.S. Anesthesia Partners (USAP) Center for Anesthesia Education and Leadership at NSU, a national hub for innovation, education, and leadership in anesthesia care. The Center prepares students for their careers as AAs, CRNAs, and physicians by leveraging NSU’s industry-leading program with USAP’s direct support and network of anesthesia clinicians to serve as mentors and proctors during clinical rotations. This Father's Day, we're celebrating a special father-daughter duo from our North Texas team. For more than 40 years, Dr. Tim Valek has cared for patients as an anesthesiologist, including 35 years specializing in cardiac anesthesia. Three years ago, his daughter, Dr. Sara Valek, joined him at Baylor University Medical Center, where they now work side by side caring for patients and supporting one another. Growing up, Sara watched her father dedicate himself to both his patients and his family, often arriving at her basketball games in scrubs after leaving the operating room. His example helped inspire her own path to medicine, and today the two share not only a profession, but a deep appreciation for the impact mentorship can have across generations. As Dr. Sara Valek shared, "I don't know if I would have done anesthesia without him." And as Dr. Tim Valek proudly puts it, "I used to be Batman. Sara was known as Dr. Valek's daughter. Now I'm Dr. Valek's dad." USAP's Dr. Stephen Freiberg continues his breathing tube series by exploring the third and fourth reasons a patient may need a breathing tube during surgery: optimizing gas exchange and delivering anesthetic gases. During general anesthesia, a breathing tube allows the anesthesia team to precisely manage oxygen and carbon dioxide levels while also delivering anesthetic gases directly to the lungs to help maintain anesthesia throughout a procedure. USAP's investment in current and future generations of anesthesia clinicians continued recently at the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. The SCA Annual Meeting brings together clinicians, researchers, and trainees involved in cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology. Through small-group discussions, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions, attendees explore the latest research, clinical advancements, and emerging trends in the specialty. Preventive care, routine checkups, rest, and taking time for a mental reset are all important parts of maintaining overall wellness. As Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to a close, we recognize the individuals whose contributions helped shape the future of medicine and anesthesiology. Dr. Quintin Juan Gomez, often referred to as the “Father of Modern Anesthesia” in the Philippines, played a major role in advancing the specialty both nationally and internationally. In 1949, he established the first formal anesthesiology training program at Philippine General Hospital and later became one of the first Filipino leaders to hold a major position within the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists.
