Emergency and rescue operations are still ongoing in Kyiv at three sites of last night’s Russian strikes. First responders have already managed to clear a significant part of the rubble, but 10 people are still missing. The search operation will continue for as long as needed. As of now, it is known that 30 people were killed in yesterday’s attack on Kyiv. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Nearly one hundred people were wounded, including children. Yesterday evening, the Russians attacked Kryvyi Rih, striking the territory of an ordinary garage cooperative. Seven people were wounded. Residential buildings and two schools were damaged. A private home in the Kharkiv region was attacked overnight. Six people were injured, three of them children. Yesterday afternoon, the Russians launched missile strikes on the regional hospital in Kherson. They knew exactly what they were targeting and that there was no military purpose in it. Sadly, a doctor was killed, and a nurse was also wounded. Overnight in the Sumy region, a drone strike on an apartment building killed four people, including a mother and her daughter. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Every day and every night, the Russians strike ordinary civilian infrastructure, and terror is the only argument they have left for not stopping the war. Reliable protection of Ukraine’s skies is needed as a prerequisite for diplomacy. We count on the support of our partners, above all with anti-ballistic capabilities. I am grateful to everyone who is already helping.

Do not delay decisions on air defense for Ukraine! This is our main request to our partners after Kyiv suffered a night of horror. At least 10 people have been killed as a result of Russia’s brutal attack against the Ukrainian capital with all types of missiles and drones. Sadly, this number may further rise. Rescue teams continue their work. Russia targeted residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. War criminal Putin can only wage a vile and terroristic war against civilians, women and children. Because in his war against Ukraine’s Defense Forces he cannot achieve a single result. Such strikes are grave war crimes and we are informing all partners and international organisations about them, calling for accountability and strong responses. On the second day of my working trip to Japan, I will be informing all of my interlocutors about this strike and the need to increase pressure on the aggressor and support for the Ukrainian people. We demand strong international responses. Not only words of condemnation but concrete action to stop Russian terror. Decisions on air defense systems and missiles for Ukraine are needed right now, not later! Decisions to increase sanctions pressure on Russia are needed right now, not later! Decisions to increase support for Ukraine, including energy assistance, are needed right now, not later! I also want to particularly emphasise that it is immoral to justify Russian atrocities against Ukrainians by saying that Moscow acts in response to Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russia. In this war, there is an aggressor and a country defending itself under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Russia has no right to make any strikes against Ukraine, while Ukraine has every right to respond, defend from aggressor, and strike any legitimate military targets in Russia. Do not equate an aggressor and a country defending from aggression. Do not justify atrocities that cannot be justified. This war is not only about Ukraine, it is about principles. And we need everyone in the world to be principled at this challenging time.

🔴 Russian drone strike hits the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sparking a massive fire

By striking the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the greatest holy sites of Christianity, Putin has forever put his name on the list of history’s worst barbarians. He should be damned for centuries. And he will lose this war. From the Horde in the 13th century to the Nazis and Bolsheviks in the 20th century, Kyiv’s sacred monasteries have suffered numerous barbarically attacks. Now we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already outmatched ISIS in their crimes against cultural heritage. Only Russian scum who have nothing sacred can deliberately damage the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique UNESCO heritage site under special protection. We will be urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding immediate and adequate responses to this state barbarism. In the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, @UNESCO condemns the reported strike on 15 June that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, within the World Heritage property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”, one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks. The strike reportedly caused significant damage to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral. Adjacent historic structures, including elements of the Lavra’s fortification complex and Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly impacted. #UNESCO condemns attacks against cultural property, educational institutions, students, education personnel and media professionals protected under international law. Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion. Heavy attacks on Ukraine last night, with more civilians killed and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO site, seriously damaged. Today, G7 leaders meet in Evian. We will discuss the next steps to increase pressure on Russia, bring Putin to the negotiating table, and end this senseless killing. Europe wants peace. Nobody more than the Ukrainian people. Russia, on the other hand, showed again its sole interest in violence and destruction.
