This isn't what Louth says in this work. I cite this specific citation on my show often (more fully) and he does not say they are "inventions" of the 8th and 14th centuries. I'm not Orthodox, btw. For starters he is contending against John Henry Newman's theory of development in that essay. And a key point that he makes is that the word "development" means different things to different people. Before what you cited, he writes: “It was clear that such doctrines as the Trinity and Christology were affirmed only in a very inchoate way in the pre-Nicene Church compared with the Church of the fourth and fifth centuries, so a notion of development was needed if one was to maintain that these fundamental doctrines were an essential part of Christian confession.”— Andrew Louth; Orthodoxy and Western Culture (SVS Press, 2005), pg. 46 So is he saying Nicene Christology was "invented" in the fourth and fifth centuries? No. He says that prior to that they were only affirmed in an INCHOATE way. Which means under developed. Not that the essence and core of the belief wasn't around before then, but that controversy forced greater grammatical precision later. He then says, more fully, what you cited: “On occasions when, one might have thought, it would be of value to employ such a notion [of development], it is striking that Orthodox theologians do not do so. A couple of examples spring to mind — the doctrine of icons and the distinction between essence and energies in the Godhead. It would seem obvious to an historian that neither the eighth-century doctrine of the necessity of making and venerating icons nor the fourteenth-century Palamite distinction between essence and energies can really be found in the fourth-century Fathers — especially, in both cases, St Basil the Great — to whom appeal is generally made, yet I know of no Orthodox theologian who calls on the category of authentic development to justify the later doctrine. Development does not seem to be perceived as an available category for Orthodox theology.”—Andrew Louth; Orthodoxy and Western Culture (SVS Press, 2005), pg. 47 This is not him saying he believes those two doctrines were "invented" in those centuries. He is saying the same thing about them that he did Nicene Christology. That they were not articulated with as great of precision as before then, but that (in his belief) they were present in inchoate forms. And his point was that there's sort of a paradox in Orthodox theology where their theologians do no appeal to development as an authentic category, but you sorta have to in SOME sense. Hence why the important point he makes about what one means by the word "development" is so important. Please don't abuse sources like this because it makes us all look bad. I don't agree with Louth on the apostalicity of EED and icon veneration, but it is misrepresentation to say that he says they were "invented" in those centuries. He does not.
