Congratulations to Jason Gerwen and Tanja Carter on their new leadership roles with the City of Federal Way! Both were selected and nominated by Mayor Jim Ferrell. At the July 7 City Council meeting, the City Council confirmed Gerwen as Parks and Recreation Director and Carter as Economic Development Director. Gerwen, a 20-year City employee and former Deputy Parks Director, steps into the role following the retirement of former Director John Hutton. Carter returns to Federal Way after serving as Tacoma's Community and Economic Development Director, bringing more than 20 years of private-sector experience to support our local economy. At last night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Jim Ferrell and the City Council presented a proclamation recognizing July as Disability Pride Month. Council President Susan Honda and Councilmember Lydia Assefa-Dawson presented the Disability Pride Month proclamation, which recognizes the contributions, achievements and resilience of people with disabilities. We kicked off Fourth of July festivities in the City of Federal Way this morning with our Miles for Meso 5K. Over the last 16 years, our community has helped raise more than $180,000 to support the fight against Mesothelioma through this event. Thank you to all of the volunteers, participants and supporters who came together to make this year's race another special success.

At last night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Jim Ferrell and the City Council presented a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth and honored the winners of this year’s Municipal Student Art Contest. Councilmembers Lydia Assefa-Dawson and Les Sessoms read the Juneteenth proclamation, which recognizes June 19 as Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. The proclamation was accepted by Federal Way Black Collective Executive Director Taniesha Lyons and Diversity Commission Vice Chair Craig Patrick. Federal Way Arts and Events Recreation Coordinator Cassie Swan was joined by Judge Danielle Havens and Art Commission Chair Tom Bristol to recognize the winners of the Municipal Student Art Contest. The winning artwork will be displayed in the Federal Way Municipal Court. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
