NOBODY EXPLAINS WHAT DELTA ACTUALLY MEANS AND IT'S THE MOST USEFUL NUMBER ON YOUR SCREEN!!! Everyone tells you delta is how much the option moves when the stock moves a dollar. Fine, but that doesn't help you pick anything. Here's what you actually use it for. On a put, delta is roughly the chance you get assigned. A 30 delta put is about a 30% chance you end up owning the shares. That's one number telling you the odds before you place the trade. Most people get this backwards. They pick the delta first because someone told them 30 is the sweet spot, then look at what strike that lands on. Do it the other way. Find the price you'd genuinely be happy owning the company at, go to that strike, and then see what delta it is. Comes out at 12? You'll collect small and rarely get assigned. Comes out at 45? You're probably buying the stock, so make sure you want it. The delta isn't the decision. It just tells you what you signed up for. It's not exact either. It moves as the stock moves and as expiry gets closer, and it doesn't know anything about a gap down on bad news. It's odds, not a promise. That's exactly why I built The Assembly. A normal portfolio only pays you when prices go up. You're sitting there waiting on the market to do something for you. Selling puts pays you for time passing instead. Stock goes up, sits flat, or drifts down a bit and you collect either way. The only case that really hurts is a big drop, and even then you're left holding something you picked at a price you chose. So the income isn't tied to direction anymore, and that's why this becomes a second paycheck instead of just another trade. Every premium you collect goes straight back into collateral too. More collateral, more contracts, more premium, and round it goes. Month one feels like nothing happened. Month 30 is a completely different number and you never changed a thing. What actually breaks this for people is quitting. They run it a few months, hit one bad week, decide it doesn't work and stop. 6 months later they start again from scratch and can't work out why the numbers never build. MOST OPTIONS TRADERS LOSE MONEY AND IT'S NOT FOR THE REASON EVERYONE THINKS!!! First post here, so let's start with the stat that's wrong. You've heard that 80% of options expire worthless. It isn't true, and it's the most repeated line in this entire space. The real breakdown is roughly 55 to 60% of contracts get closed out before expiry, about 10% get exercised, and only around 30 to 35% actually expire worthless. Somebody took "only 10% get exercised" and turned it into "90% expire worthless," which quietly ignores every contract that got traded out early. So why do buyers still lose? A study published in Management Science tracked real brokerage accounts and found that even traders at the 70th percentile lost money. Fewer than 30% came out ahead. The median retail options trader was down around $5,000, which worked out to about 21% of their annual disposable income. London Business School looked at 2019 to 2021 and found retail lost over $2 billion in premium, most of it in short dated contracts. It's getting worse too. Options expiring in 7 days or less made up 43% of all retail options volume in 2026, and OCC data puts the buyer loss rate on those at 82%. Here's the actual reason it happens. Buying an option means you need 3 separate things to go right: 1️⃣ Direction 2️⃣ Size of the move 3️⃣ Timing Right on direction, wrong on timing, you lose. Right on direction but the move is too small, you lose. Right on everything but it happens two weeks after expiry, you lose. The seller only needs one of those 3 to fail, which is a far easier bet to be sitting on. Then add time decay. Every day that passes pulls value out of the buyer's position and hands it to the seller, whether the stock does anything or not. You can see it in the win rates. Retail buying long calls and puts wins somewhere around 35 to 40% of the time. Premium selling strategies come in at 55 to 65%. And the cheap far out of the money contracts everyone loves, anything with a delta under 0.10, expire worthless more than 90% of the time. A higher win rate is not the same thing as making money. Sellers win most of the time, but when the losses come they're much bigger than any single win. One badly sized position can wipe out a year of collected premium. So selling isn't free money. It's a different shape of risk, and the edge is small enough that it only shows up if you size properly and keep doing it. Final thought: that's what this account is for. The seller side. CASH SECURED PUTS ARE THE MOST UNDERRATED INCOME STRATEGY IN THE MARKET!!! This is the one that pays you to wait for a price you already wanted. Save this and study it. Let's start with what it actually is. You sell someone the right to force you to buy 100 shares at a set price, before a set date. For agreeing to that, they pay you a premium upfront. That money is yours immediately. "Cash secured" means the money to buy those shares is already set aside. Now the numbers, because this is where it clicks. Stock trading at $100. You sell the $95 put, 35 days out, collect $2.00 per share. ➡️ Cash set aside: $9,500 ➡️ Premium collected: $200, today Only two things can happen. 1️⃣ Stock stays above $95 Option expires worthless. You keep the $200 and your cash is free again. That's 2.11% in 35 days. 2️⃣ Stock drops below $95 You buy 100 shares at $95. But you were paid $200, so your real cost basis is $93. The stock was at $100 when you opened it. You just bought it 7% cheaper than the price you were already willing to pay. One outcome pays you to wait. The other gets you the stock at a discount. So why is the income so consistent? Options lose value as they approach expiry. That decay is called theta and it accelerates hard in the final 30 days. Buy an option and it works against you every day. Sell one and it works for you. You're not predicting direction. You're getting paid for time passing. Where does the money come from? Premium is priced off implied volatility. More expected movement, more premium. Which means you get paid most when everyone is scared. Selling puts into a panic pays multiples of what the same strike pays in a calm market. Low volatility pays almost nothing. Don't force it. Now the part most people skip. Your upside is capped and your downside is not. Stock rips to $150? You made $200. Stock drops to $50? You own it at $93 and you're down $4,300. Read that twice. Selling puts DOES NOT reduce your risk. You carry nearly the same downside as owning the stock and trade away all the upside for a fixed payment. You're converting uncertain upside into certain income. Which leads to the only rule that matters. Never sell a put on a company you don't want to own at that strike. If you wouldn't happily buy it at $95, don't sell the $95 put, no matter how good the premium looks. Assignment isn't the strategy failing. Assignment is the strategy working. So how do you pick the strike? Delta roughly approximates the chance the option finishes in the money. ➡️ 15 to 20 delta: conservative, less premium, rarely assigned ➡️ 30 delta: the common middle ground ➡️ 40+ delta: aggressive, big premium, expect the shares Pick the strike where you actually want to own the business. Then check what delta that happens to be. On timing, 30 to 45 days is where most people land. Weeklies pay less per unit of risk and eat your attention. Two warnings. Earnings inflate premium because real risk is coming. And American options can be assigned early, usually deep in the money or around a dividend. Here's the mistake that actually hurts people. Correlation. Five puts across five stocks, market drops 12%, and you don't get assigned on one. You get assigned on all five, same day, worst possible day. Every position needs its cash simultaneously. People size each trade individually and forget they all trigger together. Size the whole book, not the single trade. Then there's the wheel. Sell a put, get assigned, sell a covered call above your cost basis, get called away, start again. Income at every stage. Final thought: this will never beat a stock that doubles and it isn't supposed to. It pays you while you wait for prices you already wanted, on companies you already did the work on.
