The Mbuya Nehanda ferry and others were reportedly quoted at just US$40,000 for rehabilitation — but the work was never done. That is less than the cost of a single Toyota Fortuner publicly given to an MP as a bribe for CAB3 vote. Think about our national priorities. A relatively modest investment could have rehabilitated a ferry relied upon by ordinary families in Mola, Chalala and surrounding communities. Instead, we are now mourning lives lost on Lake Kariba. Perhaps lives could have been saved if public safety and essential infrastructure had been prioritised over political patronage. We needed a rehabilitated ferry, not more Fortuners for politicians. #MbuyaNehanda #Kariba

It is frustrating and makes me angry because every time we tell these people that the roads are bad they shut us down. We tell them the hospitals are bad, they deploy their rabid dogs with pictures of gloves. We told them last year that ferry was a scotchcart. When there is a tragedy they wanna appear all compassionate. These deaths are always on them!!!! Them being Mnangagwa's government!

🔸Good day @nickmangwana, Just last year, you were celebrating this government-run, ramshackle, deathtrap ferry. The overwhelming feedback to you was that the ferry was old and needed replacement or at least refurbishment. You acted like the cosmetic reduction of the fares but ignored a disaster waiting to happen. This is what happens when a Govt prioritizes propaganda over the welfare of the people. When will you apologize for ignoring the people’s concerns and ultimately causing dozens of deaths? Who is being charged for the culpable homicide of these victims? What is being done to avoid such needless loss of life in the future? We need new leaders.🇿🇼

The Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) has significantly reduced boat fares for the passenger vessel, Mbuya Nehanda (KF 551), that plies the Zambezi waters. This has brought financial relief to travellers who use the boat to access remote areas in Nyaminyami District.
