According to union representative Robert Rabasimane, employees in the lower salary band will receive a 4.5% increase, while those in the higher bands will see a 3.5% bump. Additionally, Rabasimane urged the government, private sector companies, and individuals to settle their outstanding water utility debts. 𝗕𝗢𝗙𝗘𝗣𝗨𝗦𝗨 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗦 𝗗𝗣𝗦𝗠 𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗨𝗡𝗟𝗔𝗪𝗙𝗨𝗟 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 The Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU) has launched a scathing attack on the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM), accusing the DPSM Director of attempting to restructure the public service through the back door by introducing a voluntary separation programme without consulting organised labour. In a strongly worded statement, BOFEPUSU rejected DPSM's voluntary separation programme, describing it as "retrenchment by stealth" disguised as public service reform. According to BOFEPUSU, the programme targets public officers on salary scale E2 and above who are between the ages of 45 and 60. However, the federation argues that the document provides little detail on the rationale behind the initiative and fails to explain whether it is driven by redundancy, performance management, downsizing, or broader restructuring of the public service. BOFEPUSU said the lack of clarity has fuelled uncertainty among public servants and raised fears that government is embarking on a retrenchment exercise under the guise of reform. The federation accused the DPSM Director of disregarding established laws and procedures governing the public service, arguing that no restructuring exercise can lawfully proceed without consultation with recognised trade unions. BOFEPUSU maintained that Section 25 of the Employment Act, together with provisions of the Employment and Labour Relations Act, requires employers contemplating restructuring or retrenchment to notify the Director of Labour and consult affected trade unions before implementing such a process. According to the federation, neither of these legal requirements has been met. BOFEPUSU warned that implementing the programme without engaging organised labour would be unlawful and could trigger confrontation. Pope Leo XIV appointed Pheto to lead the diocese on April 10 this year, ending a prolonged vacancy following the death of bishop Anthony Pascal Rebello SVD in May 2024. At 50 years old, Pheto, a native of Ramotswa, will become the third indigenous catholic bishop in Botswana's history since the arrival of the catholic church during the Bechuanaland Protectorate era. He follows in the footsteps of the late Bishop Boniface Setlalekgosi, Botswana's first local catholic bishop, and Bishop Valentine Seane. Pheto was ordained a priest in 2005 by bishop Setlalekgosi and has since served the church in various pastoral and leadership roles. His appointment also highlights a remarkable family commitment to the catholic faith. His younger brother, Gafaone Pheto, has been serving as a catholic priest for more than a decade. The catholic church in Botswana is also home to other notable families with multiple vocations, including brothers who both became priests and a set of identical twins serving in the priesthood. BOKO OFF TO CAPE TOWN, MOHWASA IS ACTING PRESIDENT President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko has left for Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the 9th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), taking place from 24–28 June 2026. The Summit will bring together Heads of State and Government from the five SACU Member States—Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa—to deliberate on measures aimed at deepening economic integration, enhancing intra-regional trade, and strengthening industrial development across the region. According to Government Communications, the Summit will also review progress made by Member States in areas such as investment promotion, customs modernisation, regional value chains, and industrialisation. President Boko and his delegation are expected to return to Gaborone on 28 June 2026. Speaking during the launch of Debswana’s 2025–2029 Transformation Strategy, Managing Director Andrew Motsumi said the company’s key priority is to optimise and reshape its core diamond mining operations to unlock maximum value from its remaining mineral resources. Under the new plan, Debswana is targeting an operating cost base of P6 billion and stay-in-business capital expenditure of P1.2 billion by 2028. The initiative forms a central pillar of the company’s drive to enhance efficiency, strengthen resilience and navigate persistent pressures facing the international diamond industry. Motsumi explained that the transformation programme will be rolled out in phases, beginning with a survival and stabilisation stage that will run until 2027. BRP president Biggie Butale told The Weekend Post that although the party has not officially endorsed any political party, it will be supporting opposition forces. He described the decision as strategic aimed at avoiding vote fragmentation in an area where past results have been decided by extremely narrow margins. In the last general election, Tati Siding North delivered one of the closest results in the country. The UDC narrowly won with 321 votes, just one ahead of the BDP on 320. Addressing the media after the MPC meeting, Governor Lesego Moseki said the global economy is projected to experience modest growth in 2026 amid slowing economic activity, elevated energy prices and high borrowing costs. He explained that inflation risks remain skewed upward, mainly due to volatile energy and commodity prices, prompting several major central banks to maintain restrictive monetary policies while expectations of rate cuts continue to diminish. The committee said keeping the policy rate unchanged will help stabilise inflation expectations and provide time to evaluate the effects of earlier monetary policy decisions on the economy.
