A sign of a broken system is being charged $54 to just verify what zoning code a parcel of land in Winnipeg falls into. Open data for this by default would solve this. Equalizing the cost of development with other sources of revenue (property taxes) is another *great* option.

Replacing property taxes with a Land Value Tax in which underutilized land (parking lots) the same as adjacent developed properties is the political step necessary to address the plethora of private parking spaces seen in this image below (public lots notwithstanding).

Don’t be mad Winnipeg, we could change this. We choose not to. We’ve worked hard to make downtown a place for driving and parking cars. If we want others (and ourselves) to feel differently, we need to prioritize great places for people. (Red is surface parking)

My column tomorrow: Shared Streets allow pedestrians, cyclists & drivers to mix together on a street with no curbs or sidewalks. It sounds crazy but they’ve made streets safer & more vibrant in cities around the world. The idea could soon be coming to Winnipeg’s Exchange District

I don't see a train there that adequately represents needless infrastructure for freight bound for Vancouver or Toronto being handled by people in the middle of a metropolitan city. @apple can you get on that, thanks — we're going to need it for a *long* time in Winnipeg

May I also mention that I was not satisfied with the emoji list presented to me to adequately represent Winnipeg. All of those trains actually seem useful to human beings instead of needing to have 200 at-grade crossings and 22 underpasses in Winnipeg.
