INDIA: MUSLIMS PROTECT MOSQUE FROM DEMOLITION Hundreds of Muslims gathered in the Indian city of Ujjain yesterday to protest against the partial demolition of the historic Shahi Mosque, which local residents say is more than 600 years old. Residents took to the streets around midnight after seeing administrative action at the mosque, gathering outside the site to oppose the removal of parts of the historic place of worship. The proposed demolition is linked to a road-widening project being carried out ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh, a major Hindu pilgrimage expected to draw millions of visitors to Ujjain. The Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier this month dismissed petitions challenging the proposed demolition, allowing authorities to proceed with removing part of the mosque. The court said the road-widening work was necessary to manage traffic, public safety and the large number of pilgrims expected during the 2028 event. The mosque's management had argued that the proposed action would affect part of the prayer hall, a 120-foot-high minaret and the Mazhar Chowk Shahi. The mosque is registered as a Waqf property.
