Objection 1: It seems Catholic men err in telling women about Thomism instead of complimenting them. For affection is expressed through affirming the beloved, and beauty is a proper object of such affirmation. Therefore, to speak of metaphysics rather than beauty is to fail in due affection. Objection 2: Furthermore, Proverbs 31 praises the woman who is virtuous, but also recognized as such. To lecture instead of offering praise is to neglect the good of encouragement. SED CONTRA: The Philosopher says (Metaphysics), “All men by nature desire to know.” And St. Thomas says (ST I, q. 12, a. 1) that to know God is the ultimate perfection of the intellect. Therefore, to speak of Thomism is to lead the beloved toward her highest good. I answer that: Love desires the good of the other as other. Now, the highest good is God Himself, known imperfectly in this life and more perfectly in the next. Thus, the Catholic man, aiming to lead the beloved toward her ultimate beatitude, may speak of Thomism as a participation in that truth. However, since the good of the beloved includes not only the perfection of the intellect but also the fostering of joy, esteem, and the mutual bonds of affection, prudence dictates that one may also (and perhaps first) tell her she is pretty—thereby disposing her will favorably to receive higher truths. Therefore, the act of teaching Thomism is not opposed to complimenting beauty, but the order of charity suggests beginning with the compliment before moving to metaphysics. Reply to Objection 1: Complimenting beauty addresses the good of the affections, but Thomism addresses the good of the intellect. The complete act of love may involve both. Reply to Objection 2: Recognition of beauty is indeed praiseworthy, but leading another toward the vision of God through right reason is a still greater gift—best given without neglecting the first.
