The Cabinet has today approved the Zimbabwe Gastronomy Tourism Strategy (2026–2030), a landmark and a revolutionary movement for the Zimbabwe society that designates Gastronomy Tourism as a priority high-value Tourism product to accelerate Zimbabwe's transformation into a competitive and Sustainable Tourism destination by 2030. Anchored on the Constitution, Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and the Ministry's Heritage-Based Cluster approach, the Strategy leverages Zimbabwe's rich Culinary Heritage, rooted in the philosophy of Ubuntu, where sharing meals symbolises care, hospitality and unity, to drive Tourism growth, Cultural preservation, Rural Industrialisation and Inclusive socio-economic development. Building on the growing momentum championed by the Patron of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Her Excellency the First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, through initiatives such as the Amai's Traditional Cookout Competitions, the Strategy seeks to institutionalise Gastronomy Tourism across the Tourism value chain while developing contemporary Culinary expertise, diversifying authentic Gastronomy experiences, preserving Zimbabwe's rich indigenous Culinary Heritage. The initiative has nurtured Gastronomy Enterprises, created Employment, promoted Indigenous Cuisine and elevated Zimbabwe's International profile, including hosting the inaugural UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa. The Strategy is anchored on four strategic pillars: Skills Development, Research and Innovation, Branding and Marketing, Culture and Heritage Preservation, and Inclusive Value Chain Development and Rural Industrialisation. Government will strengthen Culinary training through the establishment of the Africa International Academy for Culinary Arts, revive Service Excellence Schools, strengthen partnerships with research Institutions, Academia and Communities, preserve Indigenous food knowledge, promote Zimbabwe's Gastronomy brand globally, foster sustainable Gastronomy practices and deepen linkages between Tourism, Agriculture, Manufacturing and local communities. The drive to shape Zimbabwe's Tourism future gathered momentum as stakeholders from Government, the Private sector and the Tourism Industry convened at Baradzanwa Cultural Village in Mazowe for a Consultative workshop to formulate the National Tourism Sector Strategy (2026–2030). The strategy seeks to provide a transformative roadmap for Sustainable Tourism development in line with Vision 2030. Welcoming participants, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa underscored the importance of responsible Tourism that preserves Zimbabwe's wetlands, describing them as invaluable Natural assets that are central to biodiversity conservation and the long-term sustainability. Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi described the National Tourism Sector Strategy as the practical implementation framework for the Tourism Policy launched by His Excellency The President Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa in August 2025. Anchored on Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy 2 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the strategy prioritises Product Development and Diversification, Human Capital Development, Destination Accessibility, Regulatory Reforms, Innovative financing and Infrastructure, Domestic, Regional and International Market development and promotion and Sustainable Tourism to drive Employment Creation, Foreign Currency generation and Community development in line with the President's Devolution Agenda of leaving no one and no place behind. Driving Africa's Tourism competitiveness and accelerating Regional Integration dominated discussions at the 69th United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism) Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) held in Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles, where Zimbabwe participated. Convened alongside the Thematic Conference on Strengthening Human Capital to Boost Africa's Tourism Growth, the high-level meeting brought together Tourism Ministers, Policymakers, Industry leaders, Academia, Development partners and Affiliate Members from across the continent to deliberate on strategic priorities for advancing Africa's Tourism sector. Key discussions focused on implementing the UN Tourism Programme of Work for Africa, promoting Tourism Education and Human Capital Development, analysing emerging Travel trends and strengthening collaboration to unlock the continent's vast Tourism potential. Zimbabwe emerged as a key voice during the Ministerial Policy Dialogue, with the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi, championing a landmark resolution on travel facilitation that received unanimous endorsement by Member States. The resolution calls on the UN Tourism Secretary-General, working through the African Union Commission, to mobilise support for recognising Tourism as a strategic Economic sector, removing Travel and Trade barriers, operationalising the Free Skies Policy and advancing the introduction of an African Univisa through Regional Economic Communities in line with the AU Agenda 2063.
