@CurtisBray6 Up 2 the foul buys one thing — it takes the three off the board. A make there beats you outright, a tie only costs you OT. But two free throws tie it about as often as a layup would, so you pay real points for that insurance. Up 3 is where I'd spend the foul.
Tied late with fouls to give? That next foul is free — spend it early in their dribble, it costs nothing and blows up whatever they just called. Up 1 or 2, keep it in your pocket and defend. #CoachTwitter
46 seconds left with the ball and a 35-second shot clock? That's a 2-for-1 — get a good look up by 41 and the ball comes back to you with time for one more.
@ha3mhu@naspopcorn@CMYGQZ12345@roadto80pct@yysburner Clock math checks out. One thing I'd add: I don't want the huck at :17. A miss with 15 on the clock hands them the ball and a live possession. I'd rather get fouled or take a shot I can rebound. Then up 3 with :12 or less, we foul: courtsideai.live/chart
@SportsPatriotUS The timeout point is the one I'd underline. Most staffs spend them reacting to the scoreboard. The tell comes earlier: two straight possessions where nobody talks through a switch. Wait for the run to show up in the score and the timeout is damage control, not a fix.
@NxchLIVE@Cxrtierjawsh_@roadto80pct@Call0nTee What incentive is there to change the rule? I’m just explaining why teams do it without the rule being changed. This is so far down the list of rule changes that need to happen, foul baiting has got to be top of the list.
@Cxrtierjawsh_@NxchLIVE@roadto80pct@Call0nTee The foul is not really about the free throws, it takes the tying shot off the board. They have to make one, miss one on purpose, get the rebound, and score. A three-shot penalty would end it. Right now the foul turns one swing into four things they have to get right.
@cubservatory@NickMcLawhorn@will_nba_hater Right that at :15 the trade favors the offense. Where I draw the line is :12 and under. Enough clock burned that they cannot get into a real catch-and-shoot look, and my guy still has room to foul cleanly before anybody rises up.
@lucas561 The way most staffs handle it: one assistant owns the foul count and calls it out at every dead ball, and the point guard repeats it in the huddle. Late in a game that number is too important to live in one person's head — it's a system thing more than a memory thing.
@TraeK_ From the other bench that's the argument for fouling earlier, not later. If they still have the advance, my window to foul cleanly shrinks — so I'd rather put them on the line at :12 than defend a halfcourt catch-and-shoot at :05. courtsideai.live/chart
Two teams can score the same points per game and not be close to the same offense. Here's the number that actually tells you something — and it isn't points per game.

@UtahBball_net With two to give I'm fouling before he crosses half, then again on the catch if we need it. Kills the clock, and he never plays downhill. The hard part isn't the decision, it's that fouling on purpose has to be rehearsed, you can't yell it from the bench with 8 seconds left.
My favorite feature is the shot grading. You can grade shots(1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and it will keep track of your individual players and specific actions average shot quality and suggest a combination of the two based of your season long data in game!
Coaches, I am trying to build the best stat tracking and stat analytics app to use LIVE IN GAME on the bench. Please please take some time to try it on a summer league game or a game from your last season. Give me feedback and I will make it whatever is useful for you!
The Courtside AI beta is open — 100 spots, free through TestFlight. Every Pro feature unlocked: live tracking for both teams, the end-game advisor, timeout cards. Coaching summer ball right now? Your feedback shapes season 1.
