Legal aid organizations are a lifeline for millions of Americans each year. They stand up for people in crisis and ensure fair treatment under the law—including helping survivors of domestic violence find safety and stability. What began as a fun trip quickly became a dangerous situation for one survivor, marked by escalating abuse and serious threats to her safety. After her former partner was arrested and extradited back to Florida, she returned home facing the difficult reality of protecting herself and rebuilding her life. She turned to Legal Services for help. Through immediate guidance, support, and strong advocacy, we helped her secure a court order that provides long-term protection—prohibiting her abuser from contacting or coming near her and creating clear, enforceable safeguards for her safety and peace of mind. This is why #LSCMatters – because everyone deserves to feel safe, be protected, and have a path forward. #LSCMatters

Last Thursday, Legal Services of Greater Miami joined advocates from across Florida at the FFLA Awards Ceremony, celebrating work that expands access to justice. We are proud that two projects supported by Legal Services tied for the 2026 Goldstein-Van Nortwick Award for Excellence: the Florida Tenant Eviction Answer Form Project and the Palm Lake Mobile Home Park Eviction Defense Project. We also proudly celebrate H.T. Smith—a legal legend, former Legal Services staff attorney, and past Board President—on receiving the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary contributions to justice in Florida. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees and advocates.
