I’ve always wondered what it felt like manning the frontiers of an ancient empire. Yes, there are the obvious facts of life on the borders- mundane duties, idling around, all around dreadfully boring for the most part, save for the ever-present danger of incursions. But beyond that, there must’ve been a “disconnect”, especially in a time before modern communications and logistics. Even in World War 1, Jünger talks about how commanders ruled their sections of the trench like their own fiefdoms. That was in a modern military whose sectors were intimately intertwined. Imagine how much more isolated say, a Roman outpost on the Rhine, was. Technically you are just a representative and enforcer of Rome, but in a sense, you ARE Rome out there. That little backwater you and your comrades oversee is your petty kingdom, it’s sparse population your subjects.

Many people are unaware that the English commander’s death, John Talbot, during the Battle of Castillon on July 17, 1453, was the result of several factors that led to his violent death: First, Talbot was unaware of the massive fortified French outpost situated on the large hill east of Castillon. When the French were taken by surprise at the Priory of Saint-Florent, they fled in disarray toward their entrenched camp. The weather was hot and dry, and the movement of both armies had kicked up a cloud of dust over the plain. Spotting a mass of men heading east through the hazy light, Talbot believed the entire French army was in retreat; in reality, they were rushing straight toward their fortifications. Next, Talbot ordered his troops to force a breakthrough and commanded everyone to dismount, except himself, making him a highly visible target. A "couleuvrine" (cannon) was fired, striking his horse just as Breton cavalry arrived, driving back the panicked English army. Talbot was thrown to the ground, pinned beneath his dead horse. And then, there was the matter of a knight's solemn vow. When Talbot was captured in Normandy in 1450, he had spoken with King Charles VII. He had been released on the condition that he never again bear arms or wear armor against a French army, a promise he had kept. Lacking both weapons and armor (wearing, at most, a light brigandine of leather or reinforced canvas), he stood no chance against the assault of French archers wielding knives and axes. Finally, during the charge, a common archer named Michel Perunin seized his axe and charged, striking John Talbot, who was trapped beneath his horse, a violent powerful blow to the face, not having recognized him. He regretted not taking him prisoner; for it was only later, upon seeing the heraldic arms, that he realized he had just killed the English commander who had fought the French for over thirty years.
