@asmeurer @politicalmath electricity growth slowed way down in the '70s and since plants were built with decade-long projections in mind, a ton of plants that were supposed to take 10-15 years to become profitable were now looking more like 50+. huge wave of cancellations happened before regulations

@asmeurer @politicalmath fwiw the cost of plants is obviously related to regulatory burdens, and I'm just reporting what I heard--I think environmentalism could be a bigger factor! but a lot of big anti-nuclear wins came after nuclear had already financially failed, using that rather than causing it

@asmeurer @politicalmath now, 50 years later, it seems really stupid that we didn't build more plants 50 years ago, but they just weren't profitable. and then in the 2000s when it seemed like we were going to get a nuclear renaissance, cheap natural gas outcompeted (which they're *really* salty about)

@codytfenwick @Miles_Brundage a lot of the things that make markets work get distorted with small investments/immediate payouts because the process itself is fun. wall street is not actually full of gambling addicts, but mostly-rational profit-maximizers; casual prediction markets encourage thrillseekers
