Rewatched that classic MythBusters episode of them trying to figure out chemistry behind Mentos x Diet Coke geyser reaction: ▫️surface of Mentos candy has thousands of microscopic pits ▫️pits serve as “nucleation sites” (they catch CO₂ molecules from carbonated soda and force them all to bubble rapidly) ▫️active ingredients in Diet Coke including artificial sweetener (aspartame), preservatives (potassium benzoate) and caffeine all lower water surface tension (the syrup in regular soda dampens the reaction…which leads to smaller geyser) ▫️also, as the relatively heavy Mentos candy sinks to bottom of container, all the bubbles from nucleation sites pull surrounding liquid into higher geyser Best part is Adam and Jamie trying to make a Mentos x Diet Coke rocket. *** Full ep here: youtu.be/GOyMPAIGLQI?si…
